Senior Katie Bates led the Eagles with 10 kills
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its second match of the day, 3-0, to Xavier University Friday afternoon here in the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena. The loss drops the Eagles to 7-3 on the season.
Eastern once again struggled offensively, hitting only .147 for the match, compared to Xavier’s .373. Senior Katie Bates led the Eagle attack with 10 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Redshirt freshman Jennifer Swartz chipped in five kills while hitting .556 for the match. Senior Kate Sulewski chalked up 34 kills, while sophomore Kim Jarzynka tallied 16 digs.
The Eagles opened up the first game strong, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage before the Musketeers took control of the game. A 16-10 Xavier advantage forced an Eagle timeout, but it did nothing to break the Musketeer momentum. Xavier hit .350 in the game, compared to the Eagles’ .180.
The Green and White never led in the second game, with the Musketeers controlling the whole game and going on to win 30-20. EMU struggled offensively again, hitting only .080 for the game.
In the third game, Xavier once again led wire-to-wire, capturing a 30-21 victory. The Musketeers hit a blistering .439 for the game, helping them clinch the victory.
For Xavier, Kelly Ruth led three players in double-digit kills with 13. Hillary Otte and Jill Quayle both notched 12 kills, while setter Jenn Walsh chipped in 46 assists.
Eastern will return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when they host the Spartans of Michigan State University at 7 p.m. This game marks the first time since 1998 that the two teams will square off and the first time since 1994 that the Spartans will travel to Ypsilanti. The game will be televised on Comcast Local, cable channel 8 in the Ypsilanti area
