Men's Track Nips Zips to Claim 20th Outdoor Title

Corey Nowitzke named MVP, Brad Fairchild named coach of the year
OXFORD, Ohio. — The Eastern Michigan University men’s outdoor track and field team notched its 20th Mid-American Conference Championship in school history Saturday afternoon here at the Rider Track on the campus of Miami University. The Eagles came into the day in third place, but managed to surpass rivals Kent State University and Akron University with 182 points to win the title. The Eagles have now won both the indoor and outdoor championships for the 2007 track and field season.
Senior Corey Nowitzke (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) was named Most Valuable Performer in the event, helping the Eagles with two victories and a runner-up effort. Nowitzke won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:56.19 (regional mark) and the 1500-meters with a time of 3:53.66. In the 5000-meters he came in second place with a 14:45.46 finish.
The Eagles won two other events throughout the three day affair. Senior Dave Adamek (Ridgeway, Ont.-Ridgeway Crystal Beach) took top honors in the shot put with a toss of 61-feet-4.25 inches, surpassing the regional mark. EMU also won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:09.15, besting the regional mark. It was this relay that put the Eagles over the top to win the title.
Three Eagles also supplied their team with critical points by placing second. Sophomore David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s) finished runner-up in the 800-meters with a time of 1:52.03. Junior Eric Alejandro (Pembrooke Pines, Fla.-Flanagan) did the same in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.13 (regional mark). Finally, senior Adam Kring (Jeddo, Mich.-Port Huron Northern) took second in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-10.75 inches.
Eagle’s head coach Brad Fairchild was named Coach of the Year.
This outdoor title marks the first since 2002 for the Eagles and 20th all time.
The Eagles will now enjoy a week off before heading to the NCAA Regionals which will be held Friday and Saturday, May 25-26, in Columbia, Mo.
