EMU Captures Second Straight Eagle Invitational Title

YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team was able to come from behind in the last rotation of the Fourth Annual Eagle Invitational to claim the team championship for the second consecutive year, posting a mark of 193.675. The quad-meet was determined by .100 of a point. Central Michigan placed second with a 193.575 while Illinois State finished third with a 190.700, and Ball State placed fourth with a 189.075.
The title marks the second consecutive year the host Eagles have claimed the title. With the win, EMU improves to 10-6 on the year with just two meets remaining before the Mid-American Conference Championship.
EMU opened the Invitational on the vault, where junior Tawna Bennett would tie for medalist honors with Sheena Smith of Central Michigan, posting a 9.800. Sophomore Stefanie James would take third with a season-high mark of 9.775.
On the bars, sophomore Monica Lucas would post a season-high mark of 9.775, finishing in third place. Teammate and senior captain Rebecca Fuss would also post a season-high mark in the event, tying for fourth place with a 9.725 mark.
Junior Jolene Worley turned in a third place finish on the balance beam with a 9.750, a fourth place tie on the floor with a 9.800, and a ninth place finish in the all-around with a 37.475. Sophomore Duyen Zu Vuong tied for second on the floor with a 9.825, a season-high mark for her, and finished fifth in the all-around with a 38.425.
The Eagles host conference rival Kent State University, Mar. 17. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m in Warner Gymnasium.
