Senior Sara Schiffbauer selected for the third consecutive year

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A league-high five members of the Eastern Michigan University soccer team were tabbed Academic All-Mid-American Conference, the conference office announced today.  Seniors Sara Schiffbauer and Lindsay Hill were joined on the squad by junior Katie Zundel and sophomores Ashley Rodrigues and Maggie Christensen.

Schiffbauer joins the prestigious team for the third consecutive year.  She was also selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV first team earlier this season.  Schiffbauer scored two goals on the season, while notching two assists.  The Westerville, Ohio native carries a perfect 4.0 GPA as a sports medicine major.

Hill, an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV third team selection, was named Academic All-MAC for the first time in her career.  Hill started all 19 matches this year in the backfield.  She was a key defender on a squad that averaged only 1.04 goals a game.  Hill is an elementary education major with a 3.98 GPA.

Zundel adds another post-season accolade to her name after being selected to the All-MAC first team.  A junior from Utica, Mich., she started every game for the Eagles in the backfield.  She was an integral part of a defense that allowed just 1.04 goals a game.  Zundel also netted a game-winning header in a double-overtime 1-0 victory at Western Michigan and picked up an assist in a 7-1 win against Buffalo.  Zundel carries a 3.59 GPA as a management major.

Rodrigues, a first team All-MAC selection, makes her first appearance on the Academic team.  The Pickering, Ontario native scored six goals on the year, to go along with four assists.  Her 16 total points led the team, while her six goals was tied for the team lead.  Rodrigues ranks seventh all-time in goals scored in a season.  The sophomore also became just the fourth player in school history to record a hat trick, when she scored three against Buffalo.  She chalked up an assist in the 7-1 victory, totaling seven points on the day, setting a new single-game standard for EMU.  Rodrigues is undecided in her major with a 3.31 GPA.

Christensen is also a first-time selection, as she adds this award to her second-team All-MAC selection.  After a freshman season that saw her score four goals and dish out three assists, the Orland Parks, Ill. native upped her goal total to six this season.  She had two game-winning goals on the season, against IPFW and Bowling Green.  In addition to her six goals, tied for the team lead, she recorded two assists to give her 14 points on the year.  Christensen boasts a 3.75 GPA as a nursing student.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
