Bowling Green Outlasts EMU, 3-2

Eagles drop their first five-set decision of the year
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Despite four players with double-figure kills, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 (18-30, 30-27, 25-30, 30-26, 15-17) decision to Bowling Green State University Saturday afternoon at venerable Anderson Arena.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 13-10 overall and 3-5 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Falcons improve their record to 15-7 and 6-2 in the MAC
After recording just 10 kills and a .116 (10-5-43) attack percentage in a 30-18 opening set loss, the Green and White responded with 19 kills and hitting .341 (19-5-41) to post a 30-27 second-set win.
In the third game, BGSU posted 21 kills, four blocks and just three attack errors compared to 20 kills and no blocks for EMU.
Eastern rallied back to claim a 30-26 game-four win, but the Orange and Brown outlasted the Eagles 17-15 in a back-and-forth fifth frame.
Senior Becky Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) paced the team offensively in hitting with .450 percent (21-3-40) to go along with her 21 kills and eight total blocks. Sophomore Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) tallied a season-high 15 kills along sides redshirt freshman Jennifer Swartz’s (Canton, Mich.-John Glenn) career-best 12 kills.
Senior Abby Reender (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) tallied another double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs on the afternoon. Sophomore Kim Jarzynka (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin) tallied a team-best 21 digs and senior Kate Sulewski (Ottawa Lake, Mich.-Bedford) notched 58 set assists.
For the match Bowling green hit .300 combining for 90 kills, 92 digs and 80 assists. Meghan Mohr led the attack, totaling 23 kills and 12 digs for the Falcons.
Eastern Michigan returns home to the confines of the Convocation Center Friday, Oct. 19, to host the University at Buffalo and Saturday, Oct. 20, against the University of Akron. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Also, on Monday, Oct.15, members of the volleyball and administrative staff will be serving ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery on Washtenaw Ave. from 7-10 p.m. A portion of all sales brought in that evening will go directly towards our “Dig for the Cure” event, which raises money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
