Eastern Michigan Senior Forward Collects Second Career Academic Award
YPSILANTI, Mich.-- Senior Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer player Michele Lawrence (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton), has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA (College of Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-District IV women’s soccer first team, the organization announced Thursday morning. This is Lawrence’s second academic accolade in her five-year career. She was also named to the 2003 All-Mid American Conference Academic Team.
Lawrence, a 3.72 Chemistry major, closed out her career with an outstanding senior season. Lawrence started all 20 games and led the team with 10 goals and three assists for a total of 23 points. Her 10 goals were also tied for first in the MAC for goals scored and the seventh most in EMU history for goals in a season. Her 24 points ranked first in the MAC in total points and is currently tied for seventh all time in EMU history for points in a season.
Lawrence tallied a MAC-leading five-game winning goal mark and was named the league’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 2. During that week, Lawrence scored all three goals, including the game winner, to complete the hat trick for EMU en route to a 3-0 shutout over visiting Buffalo, Sept. 30, becoming only the third player in EMU history to score three goals in one game and only the fourth player to tally six points in one game as well. She also scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 00:32 seconds remaining to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over visiting Kent State, Oct. 1.
Lawrence returned for a fifth season in 2005 after receiving a medical redshirt in 2004 following an ankle injury. During her career, Lawrence started in 73 of 83 games played, tallied 100 shots, 19 goals, which is tied for fourth all-time in EMU history for career goals, and added 13 assists for a staggering 51 total points, which is currently third in career scoring.
