Jones Natatorium, located within the Olds-Robb Student Recreation/Intramural Complex at Eastern Michigan University, has served as the centerpiece of the university’s swimming and diving programs since its opening in 1982. Named for Michael H. Jones, the legendary coach who led EMU’s men’s swimming team from 1968-88, the facility honors a figure whose impact on collegiate swimming remains significant. The natatorium features a full Olympic-sized 50-meter pool complemented by a 25-yard configuration, designed to accommodate competitive swimming and diving events at both the state and local levels.

Diving at Jones Natatorium is supported by a complete platform and springboard system, including two 1-meter and two 3-meter springboards on concrete, as well as 5-, 7.5-, and 10-meter platforms with rough-tex surfacing for optimal traction. The facility integrates advanced learning aids, including a bubbler system to accelerate skill development, springboard and platform water spotting rigs, and the nation’s first 5-meter platform water spotting rig. Dryland training is extensive, with three trampolines (two equipped with spotting rigs), two dry boards, a floor/platform spotting rig, a somersaulting simulator chair, and carpeted spring floors totaling over 60 feet. Strength and conditioning equipment includes eight sets of stall bars and a five-speaker surround sound system integrated throughout the dry gym. Five 32-inch flat-screen monitors with Tivo systems allow student-athletes to review performance across all dryland and water stations, supporting detailed technique analysis.

The facility experienced a major setback in June 2021, when a severe rainstorm caused significant roof damage and flooding, forcing the natatorium to close for nearly two years. The closure required extensive repairs, including roof replacement, water-damage remediation, and upgrades to the pool's mechanical and filtration systems to meet safety and performance standards. After 22 months of restoration and inspection, the natatorium reopened in 2023, fully restored to meet competitive and training needs for both swimming and diving programs.

Jones Natatorium remains a versatile hub for Eastern Michigan athletics. It hosts the men’s and women’s varsity swim and dive teams, intramural and recreational programs, and local competitions. The Olympic-size pool accommodates competitive swimming events, while the springboards and platform tower provide comprehensive diving training. Dryland and simulation equipment ensure that student-athletes can develop skills safely and efficiently off the water.
