Dave Griffore enters his sixth year with the EMU program. This is his first year as assocate coach to both the men’s and women’s programs. Griffore had been the assistant coach for two year and sereved as a graduate assistant for the men’s team from 2000-2002.
Since joining the Eastern Michigan swimming and diving program, he has been involved with coaching 62 MAC champions on both the men’s and women’s side and has been a part of the past five men’s conference titles.
Prior to joining the Eastern staff, Griffore was the head coach of the Osh Kosh (Wisconsin) YMCA swim team, leading them to back-to-back conference championships. While there, he coached four individual state champions and 17 national qualifiers and helped the team to 20 new club records.
Prior to that, he had spent a year as the head coach of the Gold Vault Swim Club in Kentucky and a season as an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico. He also served a year each as the head coach at Menual (New Mexico) High School and Ft. Knox (Kentucky) High School.
A native of Livonia, Mich., the 31-year-old Griffore (1-16-74) graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1996 with a bachelor’s of arts in criminology. With the Lobos, he was a seven-time Western Athletic Conference champion, including winning the individual title in the 50 freestyle. A four-year letterwinner, he served as the team’s captain for two years and received the Lobo Award as a senior, recognizing the best overall teammate as voted on by coaches and teammates.
A highly-touted high school athlete at Burnsville (Minnesota) High School, Griffore was a three-time high school All-American, receiving honors in the 50 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. He was the Minnesota State Champion in the 50 freestyle and was a finalist for Minnesota Swimmer of the Year honors.
