PERSONAL: Full name: Martavius Cardwell...Son of Michael and Althea Cardwell...Born 5-26-89...Psychology major...Has one brother, Michael Cardwell Jr....Both parents are Michigan State University graduates...EMU: Has played in 19 games, starting 17 times over the past two seasons...Has accumulated 151 total tackles to go along with 7.5 tackles-for-loss of 34 yards, two sacks for 24 yards, one interception for 13 yards, three forced fumbles, and two fumble returns for seven yards...Singled out for the Elite Eagle Award by the EMU Sports Performance Staff for the highest point total of a seven-week conditioning project during 2011 spring drills...2010: Missed the first five games of the year with an injury, but bounced back to play in the final seven straight games, starting the last six...Finished fifth on the team with 46 tackles and recorded four tackles-for-loss of eight yards...Had a forced fumble, a fumble return for seven yards and nine tackles at Western Michigan (Nov. 13)...Turned in 11 tackles with a pass deflection and two tackles-for-loss of three yards at Ball State (Oct. 16)...Also had eight tackles each, at Virginia (Oct. 23) and home against Toledo (Oct. 30)...Had six tackles at Buffalo (Nov. 20)...2009: Earned his first letter after playing in all 12 games at a defensive safety position, starting 11 times...Missed only the opener against Army (Sept. 5) as a starter...Finished second on the team in tackles with 105 with 3.5 tackles-for-loss of 26 yards and added two sacks for 24 yards...Turned in one interception for a 13-yard return in the season finale at Akron (Nov. 27)...Had four double-figure tackle games with a career-best 17 stops at Northern Illinois (Nov. 5), 13 at home against Ball State (Oct. 24), 12 at Northwestern (Sept. 12) and 10 at Akron...Turned in a forced fumble in the Ball State and Akron contests...Finished ninth in the Mid-American Conference in total tackles with 8.8 per game...2008: Practiced with the team, but did not see any game action...2007: One of the recruits who sat out the season as a redshirt...Practiced with the team and was singled out by the coaching staff as one of the two Practice Players of the Week, for the Ball State (Sept. 8) and Northwestern (Oct. 19) games...HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated from Carman-Ainsworth H.S. in Flint where he played football for Head Coach Jerry Parker...Member of the National Honor Society...Senior Year: All-Conference selection after intercepting seven passes and recording 62 tackles...Also rushed for 1,200 yards with 14 touchdowns as a quarterback...The Detroit News: Honorable mention All-State...Selected No. 48 on Tom Markowski’s Blue Chip list of the top seniors in the state of Michigan...Junior Year: Second-team All-League in football and track.
