Entering his first year at EMU, Ryan Oshnock joined the football staff as the special teams assistant coach. Oshnock comes to EMU after spending the 2012 season as the defensive coordinator at Ferris State University.
In one season at FSU, the Bulldogs recorded several impressive wins, including beating archrival Grand Valley State in the Anchor-Bone Classic for the first time since 1999, snapping a 10-year losing streak to Michigan Tech and topping defending national runner-up Wayne State for the first time in five years. FSU also managed to win seven games for only the second time in the past decade despite facing one of the nation’s two toughest schedules in Division II football during the regular-season, according to the Massey Ratings.
A native of Lakeview, Mich., he began his coaching career as a prep teacher and assistant at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., from 2007-08 where he helped the school to a two-year mark of 29-1 in addition to two state titles and high national rankings.
He then moved to the collegiate level as a defensive graduate assistant at Central Michigan in 2009 where he helped the Chippewas to the Mid-American Conference Championship and GMAC Bowl victory as a cornerbacks coach on the staff of Head Coach Butch Jones.
Oshnock ventured on in the same role with Jones to Cincinnati in 2010 and helped coach the defensive line while gaining both recruiting and scouting experience. Before returning to Michigan, he most recently served as an assistant coach and teacher at Loyola Blakefield High School in Townson, Md. in 2011.
Oshnock was a four-year letterman (2003-06) and three-year starter as a defensive back at Wayne State University. He was a co-captain each of his final two seasons. Oshnock earned Academic All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors four times and was a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team selection twice. Three times he was the recipient of WSU’s Randy Guzowski Award, which is for true dedication to the university community, demonstrated outstanding team leadership and exemplary school and community citizenship.
Oshnock earned his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State in education in 2006.
