CARLSBAD, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The first appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships in program history for Eastern Michigan University got off to a steady and consistent start as four Eagles shot par or better to help the team finish as was one of only seven teams to break par in the opening round of the national tournament at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., May 22. The Eagles are tied for fifth in the 30-team field after shooting 2-under 286.

"I can't ask for much more from my team today," EMU Head Coach Josh Brewer said. "You would like to make more birdies and be greedier, but we gave ourselves a chance to make the top 15 and to make the top eight. So, really, just hats off to them for playing well all day. It's like a cute story, day one, with how we played. Now, can you turn this into a movie by day seven? We must continue doing what we do. We have a knack for getting better in each day of tournaments, so that would be a good problem to have if this is our worst round of the week. I'm just proud of them for how they played in our first national championship tournament. It was a great start; now we can be excited, but not overexcited, practice, rest, and get ready for day two."

Making their debut in the national tournament and only the second women's team in Mid-American Conference history to compete in the event, the No. 27 Eagles finished with 286 strokes to sit in a tie with No. 7 University of Arkansas. No. 2 University of Southern California leads the team standings at 7-under 281 with No. 1 Stanford University one stroke behind at 6-under 282. No. 21 Oklahoma State University is third at 5-under 283 while No. 17 Iowa State University holds the fourth position at 4-under 284.

Individually, both Savannah de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d'enghien, Belgium/Institut de l'Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) and Janae Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) shot 1-under 71 to sit in a tie for 24th while Jasmine Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) and Baiyok Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Lindsey Wilson) are tied for 41st at even-par 72. Erina Tan (Belmont, Western Australia/Mount Lawley Senior) is tied for 86th at 2-over 74.

Overall, each player was making her national tournament debut except for Jasmine Leovao, who qualified as an individual in 2024 for California State University Long Beach. She and her twin sister, Janae, are playing their final collegiate tournament close to home as they hail from Oceanside, which is just under 15 miles north of the course.

Team Notes
» The Eagles shot 2-under 286 in their first round at the national tournament, finishing as one of seven teams to break par on the first day of action. The 286 strokes tied for the 16th-best round in program history as well.
» EMU's 286 marked the first time in Mid-American Conference history a women's program broke par at the NCAA Championships. Only the second team to reach this stage of the season by the eight appearances made by Kent State, the Eagles' score broke the MAC record for lowest round in any NCAA Championships round (291 by Kent State in the third round of 2010 tournament) and the lowest opening-round score in the event (292 by KSU in 2021).
» The third team in the state of Michigan to compete at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, the Eagles made history as their 286 strokes is the lowest by a Mitten State program, surpassing the 288 shots by Michigan State in 2024. The 286 also ranks second for all rounds at the tournament behind the 283 recorded by the Spartans in the second round of the 2014 event.
» Eastern was one of two teams making their debuts at the NCAA Championships with Houston being the other. The Cougars, ranked No. 29, shot 6-over 294 in their first national round and ranked 20th in the standings.

Individual Notes
» Savannah de Bock and Janae Leovao both shot 1-under 71 in their national debuts. Their scores tied for the lowest round recorded at the NCAA Championships by a MAC player, equaling the mark set by Pimnip Panthong (Kent State) in 2018 and Leon Takagi (KSU) in 2023. The Eastern duo also saw their respective scores tied for the sixth-lowest round by a MAC player while tying for the fifth-best opening-round score by a representative of a Michigan school.
» Jasmine Leovao made her second appearance in the NCAA Championships after representing Long Beach State in 2024. She fired an opening-round 72 (even par) to surpass her previous career-best round at the tournament of 73, which she shot in the first round of the 2024 event.
» Jasmine Leovao and Baiyok Sukterm each shot even-par 72 to tie for the fifth-lowest opening-round score by a player from a MAC school. The score also tied for the 13th-best in all rounds played by a MAC competitor.
» Erina Tan shot 2-over 74 in her first action since the 2026 MAC Championships, April 26-28. Her score was tied for the 12th-lowest opening-round score by a player from a MAC school.
