Four Eagle Hurlers Combine for Shutout Win Over Ohio

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Four Eastern Michigan University pitchers combined to shutout the Ohio University Bobcats in a 4-0 Mid-American Conference series-opener Thursday, May 14, at Oestrike Stadium.
John Carmichael (Destrehan, La./Destrehan/McLennan C.C.) got the start and went six clean innings with five strikeouts and one walk, earning his third win of the season. Along with Carmichael, Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley/Akron), Cole Egan (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny/George Mason), and Landon Mueller (Fremont, Neb./Fremont/Omaha) teamed up to blank the Bobcats.
Offensively, Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) led the way with a 2-for-4 showing from the dish with three RBI.
How it Happened
After a pair of scoreless frames, Eastern Michigan broke through in the third inning. With two runners aboard, Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) lined a single to left field, plating both TJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Racine Horlick/Kansas) and John Hale (Ashland City, Tenn./Sycamore/Motlow State C.C.) to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Stecko struck again in the fifth, doubling through the left side to score Devan Zirwas (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny/VCU). Moments later, Tristan Crane (Berkley, Mich./Berkley/Texas A&M Corpus Christi) added an RBI single, bringing Stecko home and pushing the lead to 4-0.
On the mound, Carmichael delivered six shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five to earn his third win of the year. The bullpen did not falter, as Emmett Gillies, Egan, and Mueller combined for three scoreless innings to seal Eastern Michigan's first shutout of the season. The Eagles' pitching staff stranded 10 Bobcats on base and struck out nine overall.
Eastern Michigan's offense finished with 11 hits as Stecko powered the lineup with three RBI and two hits, while Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.), Crane, and Hale all collected multi-hit performances. The Eagles' defense played error-free baseball and turned a key double play to keep Ohio off the scoreboard.
