YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing squad made program history Saturday, April 4, at the EMU Rowing Course at Ford Lake as the Eagles' 3V8+ claimed a wire-to-wire victory over Michigan State University—the first time EMU has beaten the Spartans in any event since 2018.

Michigan State responded by taking the last three races, but the breakthrough result signals continued growth for the Eagles as they approach the stretch run of the spring.

The regatta began with the 3V8+, where Eastern Michigan surged ahead off the line and maintained its lead through the final strokes. The Eagles crossed in 8:19.9, fending off a late push from Michigan State, who finished in 8:21.7. The 1.8-second margin was the tightest of the day and marks a significant milestone for EMU's developing depth—a direct testament to the squad's focus and internal competition.

Michigan State showed its experience in the remaining races. In 2V8+ action, the Spartans set the pace early and posted 7:47.7, while Eastern Michigan finished in 8:08.5. The 1V8+ featured a similar script, as Michigan State's top eight clocked 7:10.7 ahead of the Eagles' 7:33.3. The 1V4+ event included two Spartan entries, with EMU's crew (8:59.8) placing third behind Michigan State's 1V4 and 2V4 boats.

Eastern Michigan's results reflect key progress against a major-conference opponent. The historic 3V8+ victory signals a rise in roster depth, while the varsity eights and fours establish clear performance targets as EMU prepares for the championship phase of the season.
