YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- In the spring of 1976, the snow had barely cleared from Ypsilanti when Eastern Michigan's baseball team set its sights on Omaha again.

One year earlier, Head Coach Ron Oestrike led the Hurons to a fifth-place finish at the College World Series. The program had tasted the national stage. Now, the expectations rose.

Eastern Michigan did not ease into the season. The Hurons dominated it.

They finished the regular season 40-13. In 15 Mid-American Conference games, they outscored league opponents 98 to 46. They swept through the state's heavyweights, posting an 8-0 combined mark against University of Michigan and Michigan State University. The message was clear. The best team in Michigan wore green and white.

At the center stood one of the nation's top pitching staffs. Right hander Bob Welch, an All-American, went 10- 3 with a 1.82 earned run average. Left hander Bob Owchinko brought power and poise. Together, they gave Eastern Michigan a chance to win every series.

The Hurons earned the top seed in the Mid East Regional and opened postseason play at Oestrike Stadium, a field that carried their coach's name and reflected his influence on the program.

Game one brought a familiar opponent. Michigan.

Eastern Michigan won 6 -0. Ted Dasen drove in three runs. Owchinko earned his 11th victory. The formula held. Pitching. Timely hitting. Clean defense.

The next test came against Illinois State University. The game remained scoreless into the ninth inning. In that final frame, Eastern Michigan broke through with three runs and secured a 3-0 win. The bullpen held firm.

A regional sweep sat within reach. Michigan, however, forced a final chapter.

In the rematch, the Wolverines exploded for six runs in the ninth inning to snap a 3 to 3 tie and handed Eastern Michigan a 9-3 loss. The regional title now hinged on a winner take all game.

Owchinko took the mound again. He answered with dominance.

He threw a three-hit shutout. Eastern Michigan won 6-0. The Hurons returned to the College World Series.

Omaha awaited.

The 1976 College World Series opened June 11 at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Eastern Michigan opened against University of Maine and edged out a 3-2 victory. Owchinko and Welch combined to limit Maine to two runs on seven hits. Schmitz went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. The margin was slim. The execution was sharp.

Next came Clemson University. The Hurons matched Clemson pitch for pitch. The game stretched into 10 innings. Eastern Michigan won, 3-2.

Then, a matchup with Arizona State University, one of college baseball's traditional powers. Again, the Hurons relied on pitching. They won 2-1.

Three games in Omaha. Three victories. Each decided by one run.

The northern program had advanced to the national championship series.

Eastern Michigan's run carried historical weight. Northern schools rarely reached this stage. The climate, shorter practice windows, and travel demands often worked against them. The Hurons cut through those barriers. By reaching the finals, they posted the best finish for a northern program since 1965.

Awaiting them stood University of Arizona.

Game one turned into an offensive battle. Eastern Michigan trailed but rallied. A run in the seventh inning tied the game at 6. Momentum appeared to shift.

Arizona responded in the eighth with five runs. The Wildcats claimed an 11 to 6 win.

Eastern Michigan now faced elimination.

In game two, Arizona built a 7-0 lead by the ninth inning. The Hurons scratched across one run in their final at bat. The final score read 7-1. The season ended one win short of a national title.

The final record stood at 46-16. Second in the nation.

For Oestrike, the accomplishment reached beyond wins and losses. The Sporting News named him NCAA National Coach of the Year. His roster featured seven players who would later hear their names called in the Major League Baseball draft. Welch would go on to a long professional career, highlighted by a Cy Young Award in 1990. Owchinko also pitched in the majors. The foundation built in Ypsilanti reached the highest level of the sport.

The 1976 team blended power and precision.

The pitching staff posted elite numbers. Welch's 1.82 ERA ranked among the nation's best. Owchinko's postseason run, including multiple shutouts against Michigan and key innings in Omaha, defined the team's identity. They attacked hitters. They limited walks. They trusted their defense.

Offensively, Eastern Michigan produced when needed. The lineup delivered late inning runs in regional play and narrow wins in Omaha. Danny Schmitz's two run performance against Maine, Dasen's three RBIs in the regional opener, and balanced contributions throughout the order allowed the Hurons to win tight games.

They thrived in pressure.

Three consecutive one run wins at the College World Series demand control. Each pitch carries weight. Each defensive play shapes the season. Eastern Michigan met those moments with calm.

The program's success also reflected a broader shift. Mid-American Conference baseball had gained respect. Eastern Michigan's run reinforced that the MAC could compete with national powers from the South and West.

The Hurons did not rely on one star. They built depth. They trusted their rotation. They embraced their identity as a disciplined, aggressive club from the North.

Nearly five decades later, the 1976 season stands as one of the finest in school history. The team reached the College World Series finals. They beat traditional powers. They produced major league talent. They earned national honors.

Most of all, they set a standard.

Eastern Michigan entered 1976 with belief. They left Omaha with a runner up trophy and a place in college baseball history.

The scoreboard in the final game favored Arizona. The legacy favored Eastern Michigan.

For one spring and summer, a program from Ypsilanti proved that geography did not limit ambition. The Hurons chased a national title. They came within one series of claiming it.
