Successful collegiate men’s coach set to join his alma mater this spring
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Maddie Dugan, the head coach of the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse program, announced today, Jan. 22, the addition of Ty McGuire to her coaching staff. McGuire, who previously led the Concordia University-Ann Arbor men's program to a trio of appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, will work with the team's defense.
"I'm extremely excited to have Ty join our staff here at EMU," Dugan said. "As an EMU alum, he has a strong connection to the university and a lot of pride in representing Eastern Michigan. He truly understands how special it is to be an Eagle. He brings a new perspective that will add real value to our team and our culture."
"What an honor it is to join the EMU Women's Lacrosse team," McGuire said. "As an EMU alum and someone who was born and raised in Ypsilanti, this means a lot to me. I've spent the last 15 years coaching men's lacrosse and I'm grateful to Maddie and the team for giving me this chance. I'm ready to put everything I can into helping us grow and hit the goals we're chasing."
Prior to joining the Eagles, McGuire served as the head coach of the men's lacrosse program at Concordia-Ann Arbor from 2018 until the school closed in 2025. During his seven seasons guiding the Cardinals, his squad compiled a 57-38 overall record and captured a trio of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) crowns, including the 2023 and 2024 regular season titles and the 2025 tournament championship. McGuire, the 2023 and 2024 WHAC Coach of the Year, also guided his Cardinals to the NAIA National Tournament in each of the program's final three seasons, including reaching the national semifinals at the 2025 event. For his efforts, McGuire was enshrined in the CUAA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025.
All told, McGuire worked with nine NAIA All-Americans, including first-team selections, while also coaching one WHAC Defensive Player of the Year and one WHAC Newcomer of the Year. His players accumulated 27 All-WHAC honors, including 12 first-team selections. Academically, his student-athletes also excelled as they tallied 14 NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards and 30 WHAC All-Academic honors. One of his players was named a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American to go along with seven CSC Academic All-District accolades.
McGuire got his start in the collegiate coaching ranks at Kalamazoo College where he spent the 2016-18 seasons as an assistant coach with the men's team. During his tenure, he spent time as the program's offensive and defensive coordinator.
Prior to collegiate coaching, he spent time at both the high school and club levels. The program director and coach of the Coalition Lacrosse Club, McGuire also spent six seasons coaching high school teams throughout the state, including stops at Grand Blanc, Chelsea, Hartland, and Dexter.
A 2013 Eastern Michigan graduate with a degree in Secondary Education, McGuire currently resides in Ann Arbor with his wife, Melissa, and their two children, August and Matilda.
