Pelka Preps for FIBA U20 Women's Eurobasket

The incoming freshman will represent EMU and Poland in Matosinhos, Portugal, Aug. 2-10

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's basketball incoming freshman Oliwia Pelka will represent her native country Poland in the 2025 FIBA Women's U20 Eurobasket, in Matosinhos, Portugal, Aug. 2-10.
 
Pelka (Sosnowiec, Poland/Virtus Eirene Ragusa (Italy) and Poland are guaranteed at least three games in the five-on-five international tournament beginning with a contest against Italy Saturday, Aug. 2, 3:30 p.m. ET. Pelka will continue to take on Netherlands the following day, Sunday, Aug. 3, 10:30 a.m., and conclude the group phase against Czechia Sunday, Aug. 4, 1 p.m.
 
Other countries represented include Belgium, France, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

COMPETITION RULES
Each team will play three games within their groups on days one, two, and three.
 
  • Group A: Lithuania, Israel, Spain, Belgium
  • Group B: Slovenia, Portugal, France, Germany
  • Group C: Sweden, Turkey, Latvia, Iceland
  • Group D: Czechia, Poland, Italy, Netherlands
 
After a rest day on the fourth day, all teams will advance to the round of 16 on day five based on their respective standings in the group phase. The winners of each round of 16 pairing will advance to the quarter finals on day six. Day seven will entail a tournament-wide off day, while day eight will feature the semi-finals, and the ninth day will decide the final, third place and classification 5-8 finishers.

Pelka previously played the 2024–25 season with Virtus Eirene Ragusa in Italy's Serie B, helping the team lead Group B (20–6) and finish third overall. She averaged 6.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists as a starting forward, with two 15-point games.
 
One of the program's eight international student-athletes, Pelka also played two seasons with Stella Azzurra Roma in Serie A2, and represented Poland at the 2021 FIBA U16 Women's European Challengers, averaging 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds, including a double-double in a win over Portugal.
 
Pelka continues the trend of Eastern women's basketball players representing their native country in FIBA competition as senior Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) recently wrapped up the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations America Tournament, leading Canada to a 12-6 record over six days.
