Duo honored following outstanding play against No. 16 Michigan, Detroit Mercy

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly award winners for lacrosse with members of the Eastern Michigan University program claiming two of three accolades as Mackenzie Blackwell was voted the MAC Offensive Player of the Week and Maddie Porter was named the MAC Goalkeeper of the Week, April 8. The duo, who earned the same honors previously this season, helped the Eagles to a 1-1 record last week, including a 17-5 loss at No. 16 University of Michigan (April 2) and a 13-8 home win over the University of Detroit Mercy (April 6) in a crucial MAC contest.

Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) turned in a pair of hat tricks as she scored three at No. 16 Michigan before scoring a season-high-tying five in the big win over the Titans, finishing the week with eight goals on 14 shots with 11 shots on goal. Blackwell, who recorded her second hat trick of the season against a nationally-ranked foe (three goals at No. 11 University of Notre Dame, Feb. 15), has tallied 10 hat tricks this season, which ties her own school record, while bringing her season goal total to 42, leaving her seven shy of tying her own EMU record (49) set last year. All told, Blackwell, who has 27 career hat tricks, scored one free-position goal with the rest coming during the run of play. Blackwell leads the MAC in total goals (42) and goals per game average (3.5).

Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) was strong in goal for the Eagles as she recorded 18 saves in two games, including 11 in a pivotal win at home against Detroit Mercy. Porter opened the week with seven stops and four ground balls against the No. 16 Wolverines before capping the weekend with 11 saves, seven ground balls, and three caused turnovers to help hand the Titans their first MAC loss of the year. In the game with UDM, Porter led a defense that held the Titans to just eight goals scored, their fewest in a league game this year, while holding MAC foes in back-to-back home games to single-digit goals for the first time in program history after defeating Youngstown State (March 23), 19-6. All told, the 11 saves against UDM are the third-most in a MAC game at Eastern and the eighth-most in a game while marking the sixth time this year Porter has recorded 11+ saves in a game.

The honors earned are the fifth and sixth, respectively for the program this season with Blackwell earning the offensive award for the second time (March 4) and Porter garnering the goalkeeper accolade for the third time (March 4 and March 11). Additionally, Katheryn Wilson (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) has been honored this season as the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for March 25.

Wilson was the top scorer for the Eagles as they posted a school-record-tying 19 goals while allowing just six, the lowest allowed in a MAC contest in program history, while posting the largest winning margin in program history. Wilson, who scored two goals each in the first, second, and fourth quarters, tied the school record for goals and broke the mark for points in a home contest, both indoors and out.
