LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished fourth in the 16-team Bell Bank 'Pay It Forward' Collegiate on the Gold Course at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., March 25, with the Eagles shooting an Even-par 864 to place themselves ahead of 12 other teams, including co-host and Big Ten Conference member University of Minnesota. Rory McDonald-O'Brien led the way for the Eagles by firing a 2-under 214 to tie for 17th place in the two-day event on the par-72, 7,345 course nicknamed the 'Arizona Monster'.
In the team standings, the Eagles were one of four teams to finish at even or better as they carded rounds of 285 and 295 on the first day to sit in a tie for eighth place before shooting a 4-under 284 in the final round to move to fourth. No. 68 Iowa State University won the team title at 27-under 837 (291-278-268) with No. 49 Marquette University finishing second at 25-under 839 (272-281-286) and No. 84 University of Nebraska in third at 15-under 849 (286-281-282). EMU finished ahead of the Golden Gophers, the No. 90 team in the NCAA Division I rankings, after the co-hosts shot 13-over 877 (293-297-287).
Individually, McDonald-O'Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/South Carolina Aiken) was the top EMU finisher for the third time in four spring tournaments as he tied for 17th overall. His 214 is the best score he has posted as a member of the program and his best collegiate score since shooting 3-under 207 to win the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (March 4-5, 2024) as a member of the Rogers State University program. He shot rounds of 73, 70, and 71 in the desert to finish under par for the first time with the team and the fourth time in his collegiate career.
Bavake Sihota (Caledon, Ontario/Independent Learning Center/Michigan) tied for 24th as he carded an even-par 216 (68-74-74) that was started with an opening-round 68, which stands as his lowest as an Eagle and ties for the lowest of his collegiate career after shooting the same in the first round of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 23, 2022) while playing for the University of Michigan. His 68 ties for the third-lowest round of the season turned in by any Eagle player and helped him shoot his career-best 216, surpassing the 218 he shot with UM at the island Resort Invitational (Sept. 4-5, 2022).
Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/New Mexico JC/VCU) tied for 29th at 2-over 218 (72-72-74) as the senior carded his 11th and 12th rounds of par or better this season (23 rounds played). Daniel Robles Delval (Albacete, Spain/Escuela Nacional Blume/Rogers State) tied for 34th at 3-over 219 (73-79-67) as he used his final round 67 to climb 38 places in the standings on the final day while recording the second-lowest score of the year for EMU behind Chan's school-record 63 in the Bahamas (Oct. 26). James Baxter (London, England/Highlands School & Sixth Form) rounded out the Eagles in field as he tied for 55th at 7-over 223 (72-79-72).
