YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team will play a pair of Mid-American Conference matches this weekend as the Eagles will travel to face Western Michigan University Friday, March 21, before returning home to play host to Ball State University Sunday, March 23. The Eagles (7-7, 0-1 MAC) and Broncos (9-7, 0-1 MAC) will meet at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo Friday for a 12 p.m. first serve with the Eagles and Cardinals (7-4, 1-0 MAC) meeting for a 1 p.m. match inside the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti.
FIRST SERVES
» Eastern split its two matches last week, claiming a 7-0 home sweep of Saginaw Valley State (March 14) before falling at Northern Illinois, 5-2, in the MAC opener (March 16).
» The win over SVSU marked back-to-back 7-0 home sweeps after EMU downed Chicago State by the same score, March 8. It marked the first time since the 2021-22 season the Eagles have swept consecutive matches and the first time since the 2012-13 campaign it had been done at home.
» The match at WMU (March 21) will mark the sixth of seven meetings this year against teams from Michigan. All told, the Eagles are 102-113 all-time against fellow Michigan schools and hold a 3-2 record this year following the 7-0 win over Saginaw Valley State (March 14).
» The match with Ball State (March 23) will mark the MAC home opener for the Eagles, who hold an all-time record of 25-15 in those contests. EMU, who opened its home MAC slate last year with a 6-1 win over Ball State, is 4-1 when its home MAC opener is played against the Cardinals.
» The Ball State match will see EMU graduate assistant Masha Polishchuk coaching against her former school for the first time. Polishchuk, the 2023 MAC Player of the Year, played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Cardinals from 2020-23 before playing her final collegiate season at Texas Tech.
» The Eagles are 9-of-14 in claiming the doubles point this season. EMU claimed 13-of-23 last year, one season removed from earning the point just four times. All told, the Eagles have won 59.5 percent (22-of-37) doubles points under Ryan Kucera.
» With two wins over the weekend, Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare continued to climb the all-time doubles victories list at EMU with their 57th and 55th wins, respectively. Brichackova sits 19th on the all-time list while Vichare needs one more win to tie for 20th.
» The 2025 MAC Preseason Coaches Poll was released Jan. 7 with the Eagles voted to finish third with 35 points while Miami (48) and Toledo (38) were ranked ahead of EMU. Eastern was voted to finish fourth one year ago and did so to earn its first MAC Tournament appearance since 2018.
» The Eagles' 2024-25 roster features 10 players, including six returnees and four newcomers. In total, nine different nations are represented on the roster, including the U.S., Argentina, Czechia, India, Israel, Mexico, North Macedonia, Poland, and Russia.
» Ryan Kucera returns for his second season as the team's head coach and will look to guide the team to the MAC Tournament for the second year in a row, which would mark the first time it has happened since the 2014 and 2015 tournaments.
» Players are not the only addition to the roster this year as the coaching staff has added both Masha Polishchuk and Andrew Dobbs. Polishchuk, a MAC champion during her playing career at Ball State, will serve as a graduate assistant coach while Dobbs will serve as an undergraduate assistant.
LIFTING LIDS: MAC HOME OPENER
EMU is 25-15 all-time in its first home MAC contest with last year's 6-1 win over Ball State (March 22, 2024) snapping a three-game skid. The Eagles, who are 4-1 all-time when their first home MAC dual is played against BSU, are 6-3 when the opener ends in a sweep and 8-4 when it is decided by one point. The last time the Eagles won their opener in sweeping fashion was April 1, 2011, with a 7-0 victory over Northern Illinois while the last one-point match came March 23, 2018, a 4-3 win over Akron.
KNOW THE FOE: WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos hold a 9-7 record and are 0-1 in MAC play after falling on the road at Ball State, 6-1, last weekend. Holders of a 7-2 home record, Western Michigan's two home losses have come to Michigan State (4-1) and UIC (7-0) with the Broncos winning their most recent home competition, 5-2, against visiting Oakland (March 8).
IN THE SERIES: WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos hold a 44-16 advantage in the all-time series with the two teams splitting the last six meetings, including both teams winning on their home courts last season. After dropping a 6-1 decision last year (April 12, 2024), the Eagles are 4-19 (one unknown outcome) in their 24 matches played in Kalamazoo with EMU's 4-3 win at WMU, March 31, 2023, snapping a 10-match skid on the road. Overall, of the 23 known results, EMU is 1-2 in sweeps and 3-6 in one-point decisions. Additionally, the 6-1 setback last year halted a streak of four consecutive meetings in Kalamazoo that finished 4-3 (EMU was 1-3 in those matches).
THE LAST TIME VS. THE BRONCOS
Eastern and Western last played April 19, 2024, on the outdoor courts of the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti with the Eagles claiming a 5-2 win to cap a perfect 11-0 home season. After claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (Daniella Shved/Prerna Vichare) and No. 2 (Linda Eloundou/Andrea Quiroz), the Eagles claimed singles wins at No. 1 (Shved) and No. 5 (Kseniia Saenko) before Sabina Brichackova won her No. 6 bout to clinch the dual. Vichare added a win at No. 3 for the fifth and final point.
MITTEN MATCHES
The 2025 spring season features seven matches against fellow Michigan schools with the Eagles standing 3-2 this season through their 7-0 home win over Saginaw Valley State, March 14. Along with the win over the Cardinals, EMU posted a pair of wins over Ferris State, 7-0 and 4-0, in a season-opening home doubleheader, Jan. 18, before falling, 5-2, at home to Oakland (Feb. 1) and, 4-0, at Michigan State (Feb. 2). All told, the Eagles are now 102-113 all-time against Michigan teams with 39 of those wins (38.2 percent) coming by sweeps and 55 of the wins (53.9 percent) coming at home.
KNOW THE FOE: BALL STATE
The Cardinals are 7-4 overall and 1-0 in MAC play after scoring a 6-1 victory over visiting Western Michigan last week. Ball State, who is 2-4 on the year as the road team, has won two consecutive road matches, including a pair of 4-3 scores at both Middle Tennessee and Austin Peay. Their last road loss game in a 5-2 setback at Xavier, Feb. 28.
IN THE SERIES: BALL STATE
The Eagles hold a 33-15 advantage in the all-time series with the two teams splitting the two matches played last year as both teams won on their home courts, including EMU's 6-1 win, March 22, that halted a three-match slide against BSU. When hosting the Cardinals, the Eagles are 15-7 (with one unknown result) with the teams trading wins in the six matches. Overall, EMU has never been swept by BSU, holding a 10-0 record in sweeps (5-0 at home) while standing 6-5 in one-point matches, including a 3-2 mark at home.
THE LAST TIME VS. CARDINALS
Eastern Michigan and Ball State last played March 24, 2024, a 4-3 home win for the Cardinals in Muncie, Ind. The Eagles fell behind, 1-0, following doubles action, but quickly tied the match with Andrea Quiroz winning at No. 3. After falling behind, 2-1, the Eagles would win the next two matches for a 3-2 lead, including wins by Kseniia Saenko (No. 4) and Linda Eloundou (No. 5). But the hosts would rally to win the No. 6 and No. 1 matches in three sets to claim the team win.
FAMILIAR FACE
When the Eagles and Cardinals meet, it will mark the first time EMU graduate assistant Masha Polishchuk faces her former squad. Polishchuk opened her collegiate career playing three seasons in Muncie (2020-23) and was a three-time All-MAC performer, including being named the 2023 MAC Player of the Year and the 2023 MAC Tournament MVP. She played her final season at Texas Tech, where she graduated in 2024, before joining the EMU coaching staff this year.
QUICK RECAP: WEEKEND SPLIT
The Eagles split their two matches last week as they swept a 7-0 home decision from Saginaw Valley State (March 14) before falling on the road at Northern Illinois, 5-2, in the MAC opener for both teams (March 16). Eastern captured the doubles point in both matches with the teams of Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare (No. 1) and Lara Diaz Zayas and Daniella Shved (No. 3) winning twice.
QUITE THE PAIR
Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare have quite the team over the past three and one-half seasons as the duo has now played 67 career doubles matches together for the Eagles. With two wins over the weekend, the duo holds a record of 39-22, including 8-3 this season, with six more matches marked as abandoned. The tandem got the season started well this past fall as they were the runners-up at the inaugural MAC Fall Individual Championships.
MAKING THE CLIMB
Sabina Brichackova has placed her name throughout the EMU record book as she has tallied 111 combined victories with 54 wins in singles play and 57 in doubles. For combined wins, Brichackova needs just 10 more to reach a tie for 17th place that includes Caryn Stube (1989-92) and Mariya Toncheva (2010-14) with 121 wins. In doubles play, her 57 wins currently rank 19th all-time in program history with the 60 wins by Naomi Mokelke (1989-92) next on the list while her 54 singles wins have her three away from tying Victoria Domina (2003-05) for 20th at 57.
UP THE LADDER
Prerna Vichare is trying to join her doubles partner on the career wins ledger as her 55 victories are one away from the top 20. With her next doubles win, she will join Miriam Westerink (2008-12) and Avi Gogvadze (2014-18) in a tie for 20th all-time with 56 career wins each.
IN A CLINCH
Viki Hazmukova has been the closer for the Eagles this season as she has won the clinching point for the team twice in three wins with both coming at the No. 2 singles position. Additionally, of the nine doubles points won, Hazmukova has been part of four winning teams, pairing with Marta Komar twice and once each with Sabina Brichackova and Iva Daneva.
POINTING IT OUT
In the 15 matches the Eagles played during the 2022-23 season, the team captured the doubles point just four times (26.7 percent). Since taking over the program ahead of the 2023-24 season, the Eagles have shown great growth in doubles play as the team has captured the doubles point in 22-of-37 matches under Ryan Kucera, a 59.5 percent win rate. After the 2023-24 team won 13-of-23 points (.565), this year's team has captured 9-of-14 (.643) through the dual at Northern Illinois.
ENDING A DROUGHT?
The goal every year is to win the MAC Tournament and earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament. The last time the Eagles were able to do so came in 2001 when they swept through the MAC Tournament hosted by Marshall with wins over Ball State (4-1), Western Michigan (4-2), and the host Thundering Herd (4-3). EMU advanced to the NCAA First Round where they fell at No. 8 Notre Dame, 0-4.
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS
The 2025 MAC Preseason Coaches Poll was released Jan. 7 with the Eagles earning 35 points to rank third on the list behind Miami (48 points) and Toledo (38). The remaining rankings, which are based upon votes from the league's coaches, were Northern Illinois (30) in fourth, Ball State (35) fifth, Buffalo (23) sixth, Western Michigan (14) seventh, and Bowling Green (seven) eighth. Additionally, the coaches cast votes on who would win the MAC Tournament, which is slated for April 24-25 in Toledo, Ohio, with Miami earning five votes while EMU, Buffalo, and Toledo each earned one.
In Ryan Kucera's first season with the Eagles (2023-24), Eastern was voted tied for fourth in the preseason before finishing fourth and earning a berth in the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2018. EMU dropped a 4-3 decision to host Toledo in the semifinals.
LOOKING TO REPEAT
Last year, the Eagles finished fourth in the conference standings to earn the fourth and final position in the MAC Tournament, the team's first appearance in the conference event since the 2018 championships. Should Eastern return to the tournament this year, it would mark the first time the Eagles have qualified for the MAC Tournament in back-to-back seasons since earning berths in the 2014 and 2015 events. Eastern lost to Miami, 4-2, in the final of the 2014 event before falling to the RedHawks, 4-1, in the semifinals one year later.
ON THE HORIZON
The Eagles will play host to a pair of Mid-American Conference matches next weekend as both Western Michigan University and Miami University come to town. The Eagles and Broncos will meet at the Chippewa Club Friday, March 28, for a 1 p.m. tilt before the RedHawks come to town Sunday, March 30, for a 1 p.m. start. Admission for both matches are free for all to attend.
