Women's Track & Field Lands Trio of MAC Top-Three Marks at Michigan Invitational

The men's and women's programs combined for four program top 10 marks, 38 personal-bests, and two first-place finishes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field team set four marks that stand inside the Mid-American Conference (MAC) top-three and four that rank inside the program top-10 as the two Eastern programs combined for 38 personal-bests (PR), four program top 10 marks, two first-place finishes, and 12 top-three showings at the Michigan Invitational, hosted by Michigan, at the U-M Indoor Track & Field Building Saturday, Feb. 8.
How it Happened – Women
The EMU women were led by its jumpers, as it placed first and second in both the high jump and triple jump. Micah Martin (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) placed first in the high jump, tying a personal-best with a 1.75m (5-08.75) leap, a jump that ranks as the fourth-best in indoor program history and second in the MAC this season. Natalie Buratczuk (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North) turned in a second-place finish with a PR 1.72m (5-07.75) jump.
The success continued over to the triple jump, where Kyra Buffen (Columbus, Ga./Buford/Benedict) claimed first with a 12.20m (40-00.50) bound, one that currently serves as the third-best in the MAC. Mariia Yelanska (Dnipro, Ukraine) earned silver, jumping 11.98m (39-03.75).
Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla./The-Out-of-Door-Academy) soared in the 200m, placing third in 23.80, a mark that stands as the second-fastest in the program annals as well as the second-best in the conference. Josephine Oloye (Iwaro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School/Tayelolu Memorial) landed herself in the program top 10, finishing fifth in a PR 24.26, tying for the tenth-best run in team history. The race served as a particularly strong one for the Green & White, as five out of the six Eagles in the event ran a personal-best time.
Aleah Johnson (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins) earned a PR and overtook the program's sixth-best weight throw spot with a 16.95m throw for a fifth-place showing.
EMU also had a strong performance in the 600m, with three of the four student-athletes setting a personal-best, led by Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac), who placed second in 1:32.55.
How it Happened – Men
Lucky Fiaku (Nimo, Nigeria/Busy International Secondary) placed second in both the high jump and triple jump, springing 2.06m (6-09) in the high jump and a PR 13.98m (45-10.50) in the triple jump.
The distance squad had a productive day on the track, turning in seven PRs out of the nine entries they had. The 800m stood out, with three of the four Eagles recording personal-bests, paced by Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes), who crossed the line in a PR 1:50.28, the best time in the MAC this season.
Both Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill./Barrington) (8:37.80) and AJ Hawkins (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) (8:46.98) ran PRs in the 3000m, while Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School) ran a 4:08.89 mile PR, finishing eighth.
Freshman Leo Ignacio (Saline, Mich./Saline) had a strong run in the 60m hurdles, placing second in the finals in a personal-best 8.25. Michael Hawkins (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical/Michigan State) followed in third, also running a PR in 8.28 as three more Eagles filled the four, five, and six spots.
Bamidele Ajayi (Eikiti State, Nigeria/Metropolitan International College/Lenoir-Rhyne) raced to third in the 200m in 21.67.
