Box Score (pdf) | Highlights

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
Sisi Eleko recorded her ninth double-double of the season and joined three of her teammates in scoring two three-pointers, but a fast-paced game went to the visiting University at Buffalo Bulls, 77-55, Jan. 15, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (1-14, 0-5 Mid-American Conference) held the lead on several occasions, but the Bulls (14-2, 3-2 MAC) used a big run to open the third quarter to pull away.

How It Happened
Olivia Westphal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park/Duquesne) got things going early for the Eagles as she hit a pair of three-pointers, including the first shot of the game by either team, while Brooklyn Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius) got free under the rim for a pair of layups. Eleko (Motreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius), who was honored before the game for scoring 1,000 career points, scored just one point, but added three rebounds and team-high three assists as the Eagles trailed, 20-13, after one.

The Bulls opened the second with a 7-0 scoring before the Eagles called a timeout and went on their own 7-0 run as Eleko added three before Kyndal Lewis (Belton, Mo./Belton) connected on a three-pointer, her first of the year and her first since Jan. 3, 2024, at Northern Illinois University. The Eagles and Bulls battled back and forth in a high-paced game to send the teams to the locker room with UB ahead, 38-30.

The visitors used a 12-0 run to open a large lead at the start of the third as the Bulls out-scored the Eagles, 25-8 in the stanza. Eleko scored five points and pulled in three rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the year while Mackenzie Amalia (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk/Canisius) hit three free throws the remaining points of the quarter.

Eastern took the fourth quarter, 17-14, but it was not enough to erase the deficit with the Bulls winning 77-55. Amalia connected on a pair of three-pointers while Lewis scored her second deep shot of the game to give her multiple three-pointers in a game for the first time in her career after making one each in four different contests.

Game Notes
» The game featured the top two scorers in the MAC as both Sisi Eleko and Chellia Watson entered the game averaging 19.9 points per game. Watson finished the game with 21 points while Eleko posted 16.
» Sisi Eleko finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds to post her ninth double-double of the season and 27th of her career. Eleko, who scored 10 points in the second quarter, has reached double-digit point totals in all 15 games played this year and in 56-of-74 career games.
» Sisi Eleko wasn't done on the night as she dished out a career-high five assists. Her previous best was three dimes, which she accomplished seven times with Canisius, the most recent instance coming March 15, 2024, against Fairfield.
» Mackenzie Amalia saw her streak of scoring 14+ points end as she tallied nine on two three-pointers and three free throws. Despite falling short of the total, she broke a career-high with 57 points scored over the past four games, surpassing the 51 she scored earlier this year that included 13 at Detroit Mercy (Nov. 26), 10 against Xavier (Dec. 1), 10 at Notre Dame (Dec. 15), and 11 at UT Rio Grande Valley (Dec. 19).
» Entering the game, Kyndal Lewis was 4-of-26 in her career from three-point range, including 0-for-3 this year. Lewis, who last hit a shot from deep Jan. 3, 2024, at Northern Illinois, had not made multiple three-pointers in a game in her career before the game with Buffalo, in which she finished 2-of-2 for a season-high eight points, which bettered her season total of seven entering the contest. The eight points scored stand as the second-highest total in her career behind the 12 scored against Ohio, Feb. 1, 2023.
» Brooklyn Thrash posted seven rebounds on the night to tie her season-high, which she set one game prior against Akron (Jan. 11). Thrash, who had four rebounds in the first quarter alone, added eight points, one assist, and one steal against the Bulls.
» The Eagles finished 9-of-36 from behind the arc to extend their current streak to 118 consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer. Olivia Westphal splashed home the first shot of the game to extend the streak for the Eagles. The last EMU failed to drain a long-distance shot came Nov. 29, 2020, when Eastern finished 0-of-15 from three-point range at home against UIC.

Historical Notes
» With the loss, the Eagles fell to 1-14 overall and 0-5 in the MAC while the Bulls improved to 14-2 overall and 3-2 in league action.
» The Bulls have now won two consecutive meetings in the series and hold an 18-16 lead overall. When playing in Ypsilanti, the series is tied, 9-9.
