Seven EMU Swimmers to Compete at USA Summer Speedo Sectionals

The meet will run July 18-21 at the McCorkle Aquatic Center in Columbus, Ohio
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Seven Eastern Michigan University Swimming student-athletes are set to compete at the 2024 USA Swimming Summer Speedo Sectionals, hosted by Ohio State University at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Thursday-Sunday, July 18-21.

Marlee Christie (Seminole, Fla./Seminole), Olivia Clarino (Toronto, Ontario/Lawrence Park Collegiate), Sophie Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario/Tecumseh Vista Academy), Ashley George (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South), Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline), Madelyn Sursi (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman), and Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) will all see action at the meet.
Christie will compete in freestyle (50y, 100y) and backstroke (50y, 100y) events. Last season she set the EMU freshman record in the 100y freestyle, swimming the distance in 50.97 seconds. Entering her senior season, Clarino will mainly compete in the butterfly events (100y, 200y). In 2023-24 she came up just .3 seconds shy of setting a new PR in the 100y fly and improving her program top-10 standing (currently eighth in 55.44) as her fastest time from the season was 55.46.
Gatrall is slated to swim in the 50y and 100y freestyle events, last season she finished second in the 50y freestyle in 27.71 at the Michigan First Chance Meet, Feb. 17-18.
Now a senior at Eastern, George will compete in the freestyle events (100y, 200y, 400y, 1,500y). In the 2023-24 campaign, she most notably placed second in the 200y free time trials at the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) in 1:54.78, March 14.
Russell will take part in the freestyle and backstroke events. She is currently in possession of three program top-10 times in the events. She holds the fourth-fastest 200y backstroke time in 1:58.19, and the fifth-best 100y time in 54.33. Russell also holds the program's ninth-best 500y freestyle mark as she touched the wall in 4:50.41 at the 2023 MAC Championships, Feb. 23.
Sursi appeared in 10 meets last season while setting five personal-best times and collecting two top-five finishes.
Mostly competing in the breaststroke events, Szadorski enters the meet on the heels of a successful junior season as she clocked the seventh-best time in program history in the 100y breaststroke, completing the race in 1:02.84 at the MAC Championships, March 1. She also improved her No. 8 program time in the 200y version of the event, shaving .16 seconds off her previous fastest time (2:16.76), finishing in 2:16.60.
