Freshman goalie stopped 10 shots, recorded 11 ground balls to help EMU to 3-0 MAC record
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly award winners for lacrosse with Eastern Michigan University freshman goalie Maddie Porter being voted the MAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today, April 9. Porter was instrumental in helping the Eagles defeat the University of Detroit Mercy, 12-9, Sunday, April 7, in Detroit, and move to 3-0 in the league standings.
Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), who shared the award with Central Michigan University goalie Alexa Martel, remained undefeated in MAC play as the freshman keeper recorded 10 saves and 11 ground balls to help the Eagles defeat the Titans and move to 3-0 in league play for the first time in program history. The 11 ground balls stand as a single-game record at EMU and rank as the second-most in a game this year in the NCAA. Overall, for the week, Porter finished with 18 saves, 13 ground balls, and one caused turnover. With her play, the Eagles are tied for the top spot in the MAC standings with three games to play.
For the season, Porter is the third Eagle to earn a defensive honor from the MAC and the second in as many weeks following Sydney Lawrence (Plano, Texas/Plano East/Oregon) earning the accolade April 2. Earlier this season, Giuliana Ditsky (Wyomissing, Pa./Berks Catholic) was selected for the defensive honor, Feb. 27, following her strong play in goal. On the offensive side, Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) earned the MAC Offensive Player of the Week accolade, March 26, with Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) earning the same honor, Feb. 27.
