YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The 2024 regular season came to an end for the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team Saturday, April 27, as the Eagles dropped a 12-10 decision to visiting Robert Morris University at Scicluna Field on Senior Day. Despite the loss, the season is not over for the Eagles (7-8, 4-2 MAC) as they are set to play in the 2024 Mid-American Conference Tournament that begins Thursday, May 2, in Mount Pleasant, Mich., where they will face the Colonials (6-11, 4-2 MAC) in a rematch.
How It Happened
The Colonials jumped to a two-goal lead in the first two minutes of play before Skylar Hilmer (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) got the Eagles on the board with her unassisted goal at 12:54. Following another RMU goal, the Eagles answered with two goals to tie things at 3-3. First Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) found the back of the net following a pass from Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) before Blackwell scored her 49th goal of the year on a Hilmer assist. But the visitors would add two more scores to make it 5-3 at the end of the first.
A much quieter second period saw just three goals scored, two by the hosts. After RMU made it 6-3 with 7:08 remaining in the half, Kelsea Dague (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored her first before Ab. Alderman scored on a free-position shot to send the game into halftime with EMU trailing, 6-5.
Following the intermission, Sydney Lawrence (Plano, Texas/Plano East/Oregon) scored a woman-up goal from a free-position shot to tie things at 6-6 before RMU reclaimed the lead. Dague followed with her second in the game to tie it once again, but three more goals put the Colonials in front, 10-7, at the end of the third.
Eastern fought its way back to tie the game by scoring three goals to open the fourth quarter. Lawrence scored with 12:51 remaining before Ab. Alderman scored her hat trick just 47 seconds later. She added her fourth on a feed from Dague with 4:29 remaining to make it a 10-10 contest. But two consecutive goals from the Colonials in the final 3:36 gave the visitors the lead and the game.
