Blackwell scored four goals as EMU will turn its focus to MAC play Sunday at Youngstown State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Mackenzie Blackwell scored four goals and Maddie Porter tallied 13 saves, but it was not enough as visiting Xavier University came from behind to defeat the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team, 13-12, in overtime on a stormy day in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Eagles (6-7) and Musketeers (4-10) played all but 13 seconds of regulation outdoors at Scicluna Field before a thunderstorm forced the teams inside to conclude the contest where XU tallied the winning strike inside the Indoor Practice Facility.

How It Happened
The visitors opened the scoring with two goals in the first five minutes of play before the Eagles responded with goals from Kelsea Dague (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) to tie things at 2-2. After two more goals from the Musketeers, Caitlin Beahm (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) netted a goal to make it 4-3 in favor of Xavier at the first quarter break.

The goal from Beahm started a five-goal run for the Eagles as Eastern scored three more in the second without allowing a goal to make it 6-4 EMU at halftime. In the second stanza, the Eagles received goals from Sydney Lawrence (Plano, Texas/Plano East/Oregon), who broke the school record with five caused turnovers in the game; Dague, who netted her second; and Skylar Hilmer (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry), who was assisted by Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto).

Following the break, Kyleigh Dill (Dover, Del./Dover) scored to make it 7-4 before Xavier answered with three goals of its own to knot things at 7-7. Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) scored on a Dill assist before Kendall Nagle (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County) recorded her fist collegiate goal on a pass from Schwab to make it 9-7. The two teams traded goals at the end of the quarter with Blackwell's goal making it 10-8 in favor of EMU heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter saw the Musketeers tie things at 10-10 before Blackwell scored back-to-back goals to restore a two-goal EMU advantage. The visitors scored with 2:03 remaining to climb closer before a goal with 13 seconds remaining tied the score at 12-12. At that moment, a thunderstorm moved into the area, forcing the teams indoors where the game was finished. In overtime, the first in program history for the Eagles, Eastern won the draw control and tried to score, but was knocked off the ball with XU taking control, racing down the field and scoring with 1:46 remaining in the first overtime to end the game.

Game Notes
»  Eastern fell to 6-7 overall while Xavier improved to 4-11.
»  The game marked the first overtime contest the Eagles have played in their short history.
»  The contest also was the first time the Eagles have begun a game outdoors and finished indoors because of weather.
»  As a team, nine different players tallied at least one point in the game, which ranks third all-time in program history behind the 10 point scorers in both the Howard University (Feb. 25) and Delaware State University (Feb. 28) games earlier this year.
»  Eight different players, including first-time scorer Kendall Nagle, tallied at least one goal, which ties for the second-most in a game.
»  Avery Schwab tied for the team lead in assists in 2023 with 11 to set the school record. With three against XU, her fourth contest this year with three or more helpers, Schwab has a school-record 19 assists in 2024.
»  Sydney Lawrence recorded five caused turnovers in the game to break her own school record of four she set twice previously. The most recent instance came at home against Kent State University, March 31.
»  Mackenzie Blackwell not only got back to her scoring ways with four more goals that brought her season total to 45, but she also accumulated nine draw controls to mark the fourth time this year she has recorded nine or more in a game.
»  Maddie Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) recorded 13 saves and six ground balls in the game. The 13 saves rank as the second-most in a game in EMU history behind the 20 she tallied at Marquette University, March 17.

Series Notes
»  Eastern fell to 0-2 in its all-time series with Xavier and 0-1 when the game is played in Ypsilanti.
»  Both games in the series were decided by one goal with the Musketeers winning, 11-10, in Cincinnati, March 12, 2023.
