Eagles cut time from 2023 races

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team raced at the Knecht Cup for the second-straight season at Cooper River Park Sunday, April 14, after the initial race schedule was adjusted due to high winds Saturday, April 13.
The Eagles' 1V4, 1V8, and 2V8 boats all dropped time compared to results from EMU's 2023 showing at the regatta while the 3V8 was the runner-up in its final.
How It Happened
The alterations in the racing schedule due to the cancelation of action Saturday, April 13, forced the regatta to cut the semifinal races, making it increasingly difficult for teams to advance beyond opening heat races.
The 1V4 took fourth in Heat 4 by finishing the 2,000 meter race in 8:30.78, cutting 4.80 seconds off its 8:35.58 heat race time.
The 1V8 cut about 25 seconds off its time from 2023 by finishing in 6:58.99, compared to last season's 7:23.92. The Eagles ended in fourth in Heat 5.
The 2V8, which placed third in Heat 3, had the eighth-fastest time of the 22 boats in the event but fell two spots short of advancing to the final as its 7:08.05 time was 5.34 seconds shy of Jacksonville University's boat, which took the last spot in the final. EMU topped Coastal Athletic Association-foe Villanova University by 6.72 seconds in the heat race. The 2V8 also chopped significant time from 2023, improving by 24.19 seconds as the 2023 boat crossed in 7:32.24.
The 3V8, which did not compete at the Knecht Cup in 2023, finished as the runner-up as its 7:41.38 finish was just 4.82 seconds off of first-place University of Wisconsin Lightweight. EMU edged CAA-member University of Connecticut by 1.68 seconds in the race.
Post Race Quotes
"It's disappointing to miss racing opportunities anytime there are cancellations due to weather," said Head Coach Kemp Savage "However, the team did a really good job rising above that disappointment and raced. We still have a lot of work to do on our consistency and race execution. I want to give extra attention to our 3V8 entirely of freshmen, mostly novice 3V8. They dueled with UConn in the final 100m to secure a solid second place finish."
"Although we didn't race as much as we were hoping to this weekend, we did well with handling the things we couldn't control and staying focused," said sophomore Delani Fisher (Ellettsville, Ind./Bloomington North). "During the race we executed our plan well and were able to make our move on some boats. We had some really good energy going into this race and I think we are all excited to keep proving our speed that we've seen in practice. I'm really excited to build off of today's race and get back to work!"
"The start was rocky but we didn't let that affect our race and we got it right back," said freshman Abigail Tirollo (Orange County, Conn./Amity). "We had a goal and we wanted to accomplish it. Everyone worked together to achieve that goal and showed off all the work we had put in for the last two semesters. Everyone pushed all the way up until the last stroke of the race. We started to move and held it together when other boats fell off."
"I think the team had such a fun weekend exploring and racing," said freshman Tatum Nettle (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy). "We made some great memories and started the spring season off on a good note. I'm so proud of all our boats this weekend!"
