FAIRFAX STATION, Va. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team raced at the George Mason Invite for the second-straight season at Sandy Run Regional Park Sunday, April 21.

The Eagles' 1V4, 1V8, and 2V8 boats all dropped time compared to results from EMU's 2023 showing at the regatta with both the 1V8 and 2V8 boats winning their respective Petite Finals and the 1V4 and 3V8 boats competing in their respective Grand Finals.

How It Happened
EMU's 1V4 successfully advanced to the Grand Final via a 8:17.7 heat race performance before securing a sixth-place performance in a 8:19.9 showing. Both times were quicker than the Eagles' 2023 efforts as the 1V4 raced to 9:18.6 and 8:23.2 finishes at GMU last season.

The 1V8 (7:04.6) and 2V8 (7:10.8) each secured Petite Final wins, respectively.

Eastern's 1V8 cut off more than 15 seconds from 2023 as last season's group finished in 7:21.6. The 1V8 also improved its heat race time as the Eagles finished the initial race in 7:05.7 after 2023's 7:24.1 effort.

The 2V8 saw the most improvement of any boat from 2023 as the 2024 crew's 7:10.8 is 52.6 seconds quicker than the 8:03.4 Petite Final result from last season. The 2V8's heat time saw even more improvement, dropping its heat race time from 8:16.1 in 2023 to 7:21.9 Sunday.

Despite freshman Gabby Charvat (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) being elevated to the 1V8, the 3V8 continued its impressive three-race run as the group tallied the top time in the heat race at a 7:29.2 clip. EMU chopped off 1.4 seconds in the afternoon's Grand Final but settled for a bronze finish, coming exactly three seconds off the pace of the top boat. The Eagles did not send a 3V8 boat to the George Mason Invite in 2023.

Post Race Quotes
"The racing today was what we were hoping to get last weekend," said Head Coach Kemp Savage. "Multiple trips down the course and the ability to make adjustments and grow. We saw some really good changes in the 1V8 and 2V8 between heats and finals that we will build on in the next 4 weeks for CAAs. The 3V8 got two really good races where they had to fight for every inch. The four posted a great time in the heat but struggled for pace in the grand final. We are going home getting our seniors graduated and going back to work to make a move in the CAA."

"Racing today was executed very well. We went out with confidence and were ready to go fast," said senior Jessica LaRoy (Monroe, Mich./Monroe). "The atmosphere of this boat was one of the best I have ever been a part of and the race results showed this. We raced hard and had great mindsets all while having fun. This is the best 3v boat I've seen in my four years with EMU rowing and makes me very excited to see what the team will do at our home race next weekend and CAA's."

"This weekend we really came in with a strong mindset as we lacked the racing opportunities last week," said freshman Bryah Moriarty (Christchurch, New Zealand/Burnside). "We all went out in the heats trying to just race our best for our boats. Our starts and our fight was good. This was really shown in our finals. Even though they were the Petite Finals we really found some speed this weekend that we have been missing recently. Even though the last week we dealt with bad weather and multiple line up changes, we were very resilient in our racing today."
