Porter breaks school record with 20 saves while Blackwell notches another hat trick
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team received a record-breaking performance in goal from freshman Maddie Porter while Mackenzie Blackwell notched another hat trick, but it was not enough as the Eagles dropped a 14-5 decision on the road at Marquette University Sunday, March 17, in Milwaukee, Wis. The loss dropped the Eagles to 3-4 on the year while the host Golden Eagles improved to 3-6.
How It Happened
It was a game of runs that saw the hosts jump out to a 4-0 lead before Eastern was able to respond. Sydney Lawrence (Plano, Texas/Plano East/Oregon) halted the run with a goal at 5:26 in the first before Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) followed at 3:09 with her first of the day. Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) made it three in a row for the visitors with Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto) assisting her at 2:41 to make it 4-3 at the end of the first.
The Eagles tied the game at 4-4 with Blackwell netting her second of the day, this time on a feed from Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) before the hosts scored twice to make it 6-4 in favor of MU. The two sides traded goals to end the stanza with Blackwell securing her hat trick with a tally at 4:11.
From there, however, the Eastern offense would be held scoreless as the Golden Eagles added four goals in the third and three more in the fourth to close out the scoring for a 14-5 win.
Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), who faced 44 shots on the day, including 34 on frame, turned aside 20 attempts to smash her career-high save total, which was the nine she recorded in the season opener at then-No. 7 University of Notre Dame, Feb. 9. The 20 saves also bested Giuliana Ditsky's (Wyomissing, Pa./Berks Catholic) previous record of 12 saves she recorded twice last year, including at home against Central Michigan University, April 5, 2023, after first doing so at Butler University, March 26, 2023. On a national level, Porter is the fourth different player in NCAA Division I this year to make 20+ stops in a single game with her total tying for the second-highest in 2024 as Kya Risher of Central Connecticut State University made 22 saves against Lafayette College, Feb. 28.
