YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- A run of nine consecutive goals scored to open the game made a sunny day in Ypsilanti that much brighter for the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team as the Eagles posted a 15-8 win over visiting Butler University Friday, March 15, at Scicluna Field in EMU's home opener. After playing its first five games of the season on the road, Eastern (3-3) secured its third victory of the season by defeating the Bulldogs (1-7) to rebound from a close 7-6 loss at Lafayette College, March 9.
How It Happened
Eastern came out hot from the start as the Eagles scored the first nine goals of the contest to build a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and a 9-1 lead at halftime. Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) continued her excellent offensive form as the sophomore opened the scoring at 13:42 on a slick pass from Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) before Amber Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) netted a woman-up goal less than one minute later on a pass from Grollman. The opening stanza closed with Sydney Lawrence (Plano, Texas/Plano East/Oregon) hammering home a shot and Blackwell adding her second off a pass from Lawrence.
The second started with Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) scoring before Caitlin Beahm (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) netted the first goal of her collegiate career. Blackwell came next with a pair of goals before Beahm tallied again for her second of the day and what would stand as the game-winning strike. The Bulldogs answered with their first with 34 seconds remaining in the half to make it 9-1.
In a reverse of the opening quarter, the visitors started with the hot hand as they tallied the first four goals to climb back into the contest, 9-5. Skylar Hilmer (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) ended the scoring run of Butler as she found an opening and scored despite the Eagles being a woman down. Her goal marked the first time this year and just the second time in program history the Eagles have scored a woman-down goal after Lawrence scored at Xavier University, March 12, 2023. Blackwell then added her fifth to make it an 11-5 game heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, the two teams traded goals with Amber Alderman and Lawrence answering Butler goals before Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto) made it 14-7. After the final goal from BU, Blackwell scored her sixth on a pass from Lawrence to end the scoring at 15-8.
