Eastern Falls to Ball State, 11-8, Despite Ninth Inning Surge

3/10/2024 5:48:00 PM | Baseball

The Eagles will next face Morehead State University in a four-game set Friday-Sunday, March 15-17

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team put together a last-chance comeback, scoring six runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 11-8 to Ball State University Sunday, March 10.

The Eagles fell to 5-10 (2-1 MAC) on the season while Ball State improved to 10-6 (1-2 MAC).

In the batter's box, the Eagles were led by senior Blake McRae (Armada, Mich./Romeo/Lansing C.C.), who went 1-for-3 on the day with a walk and three RBI. Senior Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif./University Prep/Crown College) also put together a noteworthy performance at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.

Sophomore Cooper Vance (New Waterford, Ohio/Mohawk) also chipped in for Eastern Michigan, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

How it Happened
Trailing 5-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Eastern got an RBI single from McRae, scoring junior Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville) from second base.

The Cardinals expanded their lead to 10-1 before the Eagles offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Sophomore Drew Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush/Ohio State) came across to score the lone run of the inning for Eastern Michigan, which brought the score to 10-2 in favor of the Cardinals.

Ball State expanded their lead to 11-2 before the EMU offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 11-8 in the ninth. The Eagles' bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Schroedle. The ball game ended with that ninth-inning rally falling short.

Game Notes
» Entering the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh, Jones recorded the first single of his college career. Jones scored both of his times getting on base, marking the first two runs of his time as an Eagle.
» McRae drove three runs for the Eagles, marking his third multi-RBI game. The senior also recorded a walk in the game. McRae has recorded a walk and RBI in three games this season, and eight times in his EMU career. The senior finished the game with three RBI for the second time this season and the third time in his time donning the script E.
» Jimmy Kunst (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) and Ty Stolarski (Medina, Ohio/Medina Senior/Akron) each saw their second respective appearance on the mound this season. Stolarski tied his career-high with one strikeout and didn't allow an earned run for the first time in his EMU tenure.
» Schroedle finished the game with multiple hits and RBI for the third game of the season. Schroedle previously accomplished the feat in EMU's 16-6 win over Belmont University, Feb. 18, and against the University of Southern Indiana, Feb. 23.
» Entering the game in the bottom of the eighth, Aidan Arborgast (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson/Mid-Michigan C.C./Kellogg C.C.) drew the first walk of his career. Arbogast also captured the first RBI of his career on his second hit of the season, coming in the ninth inning.
» Eastern put up its sixth four-run inning of the season as they stormed back in the ninth inning, scoring six runs.
» Jackson Militello (Howell, Mich./Howell) saw the first at-bat of his career, drawing a walk in the top of the ninth. The sophomore came around to score off a Lucas Johnson (Hamilton, Ontario/Westdale Secondary/Wright State) walk for the first run of his career.
» Vance tallied two hits for the fifth time this season. The shortstop also drove in a run for the Eagles, his team-leading 14th of the season.
» Johnson drew two base-on-balls for the second time as an Eagle, previously doing so in Eastern's 14-4 victory over Houston Christian University, Feb. 29.

Historical Notes
» Sunday's game marked the 172nd all-time between the Eagles and Cardinals, after the loss, Ball State re-gained the series lead at 86-85-1.

Up Next
