ORANGEBURG, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell on the road at South Carolina State University today, Feb. 27, as the Bulldogs recorded a 6-1 victory over the Eagles at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center in Orangeburg, S.C. The Eagles (5-5) earned their lone point from Andrea Quiroz (Lima, Peru/La Molina 1278/Alcorn State), who won in straight sets at No. 3 singles.
Notes
›› Eastern fell to 5-5 overall while South Carolina State improved to 4-1.
›› It is a tale of two cities for the Eagles so far in 2024 as EMU stands 5-0 at home and 0-5 away.
›› The match marked the first time the two teams have met on the courts.
›› Andrea Quiroz won in straight sets to secure her 13th win of the year, an improvement of 10 victories over her 2023 season.
›› Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic/Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava) battle at No. 5 singles before falling in tie breakers in both sets, 7-3.
How It Happened
The host Bulldogs, champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 2023 and a participant in the NCAA Tournament, took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, the Eagles quickly tied it up as Quiroz sprinted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. From there, however, the Eagles would fall in the remaining five matches to lose, 6-1. Brichackova's marathon at No. 5 singles was a close battle that the Eastern junior nearly won as she forced tiebreakers in both sets but dropped 7-3 decisions in each tie breaker to fall, 7-6(3), 7-6(3).
