ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs opened their 2024-25 indoor season at the GVSU Holiday Open, hosted by Grand Valley State University, at the Kelly Family Sports Center Friday, Dec. 6.
The women led the way as they posted 13 top-three finishes and set four marks that land inside the program top-10, while the men notched four top-three finishes. In total, the Eagles recorded 52 collegiate personal-best marks with the men setting 27 and the women 24.
How it Happened – Women
The Eastern women's night was highlighted by Josephine Oloye (Iwaro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School/Tayelolu Memorial) and Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla./The-Out-of-Door-Academy). The duo placed first and second, respectively, in the 400m dash. Each set a personal-best and cracked the program top-10 as Oloye stands ninth in program history (54.68) while Walkes slots 10th (54.79).
Aleah Johnson (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins) and Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague) Joined Oloye and Walks in the program-10. Johnson broke in at No. 7 in the weight throw with a 16.65-meter (54-07.50) toss. Moreno did so in the 5000-meter run as the senior crossed the finish line in fourth place in 16:31.78.
The Eagles had a strong showing in the horizontal jumps with Green and White filling the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 spots in the triple jump. Mariia Yelanska (Dnipro, Ukraine) grabbed gold, leaping 11.68-meters (38-04.00). She was followed by freshman Mariah Taylor (East Lake, Fla./East Lake) in second (11.21-meters – 36-09.50) with Nyla Joseph-Guevara (Coral Springs, Fla./Fort Lauderdale) in third (10.99-meters – 36-00.75).
The jumps team continued its strong day over to the high jump, where Micah Martin (Clinton Township, Mich./L'anse Creuse) and Natalie Buratczuk (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North) tied for silver, both clearing 1.70-meters (5-07.00).
Newcomer Frankie Moore (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) finished first in her collegiate track debut, finishing first in the second heat of the 3000-meter run in 10:32.99.
Cara Weber (Union, Ky./Larry A. Ryle) had a notable performance in the third heat of the 5000-meter run, as she crushed her previous personal best (18:57.24), crossing the line in 17:42.50 for a fourth-place finish.
How it Happened – Men
Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) earned the lone event win for the Eastern men, claiming gold in the shotput with a 14.48-meter (47-06.25) throw.
Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Lucky Ezechukwuchiri (Nimo, Nigeria/Busy International Secondary) each earned second-place finishes. McCoy finished second in 4:10.36 in the one mile run and Ezechukwuchiri grabbed silver in the high jump via a strong 2.09m (6-10.25) bounce.
Sophomore Samuel Jeffery (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley Secondary) placed third in the long jump, setting a personal-best leap at 7.15-meters (23-05.50).
Eastern totaled four events with more than one Eagle seeing action where all student-athletes competing recorded personal-best marks, including the 200-meter dash, one mile run, 3000-meter run, and long jump.
