YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Josh Brewer, head coach of the Eastern Michigan University women's golf program, announced today, Nov. 26, the signings of five student-athletes to Athletic Financial Aid Agreements to continue their respective academic and athletic careers with the Eagles. Four of the newcomers are set to join the program in time for the 2025-26 season while one, Erina Tan, will join the team for its 2025 spring season.
"We are excited to welcome a top recruiting class to Ypsilanti," Brewer said. "It is important to stack classes on top of each other as we strive to win the MAC Championship and a national title. This quartet will give us the opportunity to raise Eastern Michigan women's golf to heights now seen before. Each player has competed and won national and international competitions. They understand what it means to compete at the highest level and be a member of a winning team. We want to thank each player, their families, and national teams for believing in our vision of creating a winning culture in our program."
Along with the addition of Tan (Belmont, Western Australia/Mount Lawley Senior HS), who is set to compete for the Eagles for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, the class features junior transfer Baiyok Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Barton CC/Lindsey Wilson) and a trio of freshmen in Pavitida 'Amy' Raemmuang (Phitsanulok, Thailand/St. Nicholas School), Krittiya 'Grace' Thanintorndamrongdej (Bangkok, Thailand/Kasetsart University Laboratory School), and Matilde Zocchi (Turin, Italy/Liceo Vittoria HS).
Tan comes to Ypsilanti with a wealth of playing experience and ended the most recent playing cycle (Nov. 1, 2023-Oct. 31, 2024) ranked No. 9 in the Australian Women's Order of Merit rankings. Currently ranked No. 1,048 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), Tan competed in eight events in 2024 and played in the top 10 five times, including finishing third at the Western Australia Amateur. In 2023, Tan was named the Western Australia Junior Girls Golfer of the Year after she took runner-up honors at the Women's Western Australia State Amateur. She was a two-time Drummonds Junior Amateur champion, capturing titles at the 2022 and 2023 events.
"We are excited to have Erina join us in January for the current season," Brewer said. "Her experience of competing in international events and being one of the best junior golfers in Australia will be a major asset to us this spring and the following seasons. I want to thank Erina and her family for joining our program as we continue to build and grow champions."
Raemmuang is off to a strong start in her 2024 season as she captured medalist honors as the TJGA-TJGS #2 Northern Region even in Thailand after placing in the top four in three other events, including second at the International Junior Masters. The 15th-place finisher as the Singapore Junior Masters, Raemmuang helped her team to a pair of victories, including the 39th Thailand National Youth Regional and the 48th Thailand National Games.
"Amy comes to us as a rising member of the Thai National program," Brewer stated. "She has competed and won various tournaments at home. We really enjoyed the fact she challenged herself by competing in multiple events in the United States as well. We know her experience and work ethic are going to transition well in helping us climb to the top of college golf. We also want to thank Amy, her family, and George at ARC for believing in the vision we have for Amy and our golf program."
Sukterm is already well versed in American collegiate golf as she is currently a member of the Lindsey Wilson College program and is the top-ranked player in the NAIA this year. The runner-up at the 2024 NJCAA National Championships with Barton College last year, Sukterm has climbed to No. 266 in the WAGR after winning three of the four tournaments she has played in for LWC in the fall. All told, she has played in 14 collegiate events and won 10 times. Over the summer, she competed in the SINGHA-NSDF Royal Hua Hin 100th pro tournament in Thailand and placed 31st overall.
"Baiyok is one of the top golfers in the 2025 recruiting class," Brewer said. "She comes to us with two years of eligibility remaining after finishing runner-up at the NJCAA Championship last year and is currently the top-ranked player in the NAIA at her signing. Baiyok's experience and wins at the national and international level speaks for itself. We know we are welcoming not only an amazing talent to Ypsi but also a great person. Baiyok is exactly the kind of student-athlete we are happy to call an Eagle. We want to thank Baiyok, her father and coaches for believing in our vision for Eastern golf and her career."
A member of the Thai National Team program, Thanintorndamrongdej has been ranked as high as No. 658 in the WAGR after finishing in the top 10 three times in 2024. Among her many tournaments played, she competed in the Thai LPGA Classic, where she finished 58th in the professional event, after placing 21st at the Thailand Ladies Amateur Open.
"Grace is one of the top juniors in Thailand," said Brewer. "She wants to be a professional golfer and knows that by becoming an Eagle she can achieve that dream through our support and guidance. We look forward to welcoming Grace to campus next fall as we know she is going to be a major piece in our movement to the top of college golf. I want to thank Grace and her family for believing in our vision for her and the program."
Zocchi has played as a member of the Italian National Team, most recently at the 2024 European Girls' Team Championship in Sweden where she helped her team to a 5-2 win over Belgium with her 6&5 individual victory. A two-time top 20 finisher at the Italian Girls U18 National Championships, including a runner-up showing in 2023, Zocchi placed among the top 10 in 8-of-15 tournaments played in 2024, including three runner-up finishes.
"Matilde is not only one of the top junior golfers in Italy, but in all of Europe," Brewer said. "We have enjoyed watching her development during the recruiting process. With her work ethic and confidence, we know Matilde will continue to ascend all rankings. I want to thank Matilde and her family for believing in our vision for her and the program. Also, I must thank (EMU Assistant Coach) Caterina Don who played the lead role in recruiting Matilde."
The current Eagles recently completed their fall schedule and will return to action when they open the 2025 spring season at the Match in the Desert, Monday, Jan. 27, at Gold Canyon, Ariz. The University of Kansas will host the single round event that will feature several teams ranked highly in the national polls.
