The middle blocker ranked second in the MAC in conference matches with 1.24 blocks per-set

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University volleyball freshman middle blocker Hatteras Welker was named to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) All-Freshman Team, based on a vote by the conference's 12 head coaches using conference stats only, as the conference announced its All-MAC and specialty awards Wednesday, Nov. 20.

In conference matches only, Welker (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) totaled 68 TB (nine solo, 59 assisted), ranking second in the conference with 1.24 blocks/set, she led an Eagles' team that ranked third in the MAC in conference play in both TB (158) and blocks/set (2.32). Welker's 68TB in MAC play came despite playing the third-least amount of sets (55) of the players ranked in the MAC top-10 in conference TB. She added offense as well, notching 88 kills (1.60/set) and 132.5 points (2.41/set).

Factoring in the whole season, Welker led the conference in both total blocks (135) and blocks per-set (1.27), figures that rank her 22nd and 39th in the nation, respectively. She had a historic season for the Eagles, as her 135 blocks mark a freshman record and stand as the second-most in a single season in the rally scoring era (2008-pres.).

The 6-foot-2 middle blocker paced an Eastern team that led the MAC with 305.5 blocks and slotted third in the conference with 2.48 blocks per-set. Nationally, the Eagles ranked fourth in total blocks and 52nd in blocks per set. The 2024 team's 305.5 total blocks stands as the second-most in program history in the rally scoring era, while its 2.48 blocks per set mark a program record.

She shined in single-match scenarios as well, totaling the second-most blocks in a match when she sent away 10 in a 3-1 win over Indiana State, Sept. 20., a figure that serves as the most in a four-set match in the MAC. She also posted the best four-set hitting percentage in the conference that day, drilling nine kills off a .692 clip.

Additionally, Welker totaled the second-most blocks in a three-set match with eight against Toledo, Oct. 11, and the third-most in a five-set contest with nine versus Miami, Oct. 5. The rookie complemented her defense with offense, recording 142 kills (1.34/set) off a .214 hitting percentage to go along with 19 aces, totaling 235.5 points (2.22/set).

Furthermore, Welker's award marks the program's first all-freshman player since Raeven Chase (2018-2022) was named to the list following the 2019 regular season. The honor also goes down as the first all-freshman selection in the Head Coach Kevin Foeman era.
