The win marked the largest win to open a season under Head Coach Derek Perkins
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Abby Szadorski's three event wins powered the Eastern Michigan University swim and dive team to a 190-108 season-opening victory over the Cleveland State University Vikings Friday, Oct. 18, at Busbey Natatorium.
Six Eagles won multiple events, as the team won nine of the 12 individual swimming events in the meet, and 12-of-16 total events.
The win marked the fourth season-opening victory in Head Coach Derek Perkins six years at the helm of the program, and went down as the largest margin of victory (82 points) in a season-opening win under him.
How it Happened
Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) swam to victories in both the 100y (1:05.12) and 200y breaststroke (2:19.26), and swam the second leg in the 200y medley relay, as the Eastern team of Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline), Szadorski, Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, Calif./The King's Academy), and Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast) touched the wall first in 1:46.18.
Eastern raced to first in the 400y freestyle with Emma Littrell (Taylor Mill, Ky./St. Henry District), Russell, Sophie Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario/Tecumseh Vista Academy), and Noble clocked in at 3:33.31 for the win.
On the boards, Rebekah Knapp (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline) appeared in mind-season form as she punched her ticket to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the 3m dive with a personal-best 317.25 score for a first-place finish. Malia Maire (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) joined Knapp with a first-place showing in the 1m, also notching a career-best as she posted 247.50 points.
Freshman Azra Umut (Istanbul, Turkey/Fenerbahce School) excelled in her first collegiate meet, sweeping both backstroke events. She swam the 100y in 57.67 and finished the 200y in 2:04.94. Joining her with two wins on the night was Ali Kudo (Guelph, Ontario/John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational), as she triumphed in the 200y (1:53.80) and 500y (5:04.03) freestyle events.
