Cross Country Heads to Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs are set to cross state lines, heading to Bowling Green, Ohio, for the 35th Annual Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the Bowling Green State University Falcons, Friday, Sept. 15, with the men's 8K race starting at 5:30 p.m. and the women's 6K at 6:05 p.m.
It will be a highly-competitive field Friday evening with squads from the University of Akron, Ball State University, Bowling Green, the BGSU club cross country team, Central Michigan University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, Saginaw Valley State University, the University of Toledo, and Western Michigan University set to compete alongside the Eagles.
Both EMU teams will look to build upon its strong opening-meet performances at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, hosted by CMU, Sept. 1. Both the men's and women's squad captured a second-place finish, respectively.
Senior harrier Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) paced the Eastern men at the Drenth as he placed eighth overall, crossing the finish line in 15:14.2. Overall, the Eagle's men featured five runners who finished top 15 individually, and scored 37 points as a team.
For the women, it was no other than senior captain Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) who led the charge at the CMU-hosted meet as she placed second overall, finishing in 17:15.5, to begin her senior campaign. Davies was closely tailed by junior Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hage), who took third place and clocked in at 17:51.5. Tabatha Walford (Northhamptonshire, England/Bishop Stopford/Nevada) also secured herself a top 10 finish, placing eighth in 18:11.4.
EMU had successful outings last season at the Mel Brodt, with the women securing a second-place finish behind Davies' fifth-place finish in the 6K in 22:06.2. Second-year harrier Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) carried the torch for the men last year, placing in the top 10 for the second time in his Eastern career as he slotted in fourth place, running the 8K in 25:53.1. When all was said and done, the Eagles' men finished fourth, scoring 71 points.

Upon completion of the Mel Brodt, EMU will head down to Louisville, Ky., where they are slated to attend the 22nd Annual Live in the Lou Cross Country Classic, Saturday, Sept. 30, at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. Race designation and start time will be announced later.
