Eagles place second in season-opener

SHEPHERD, MICH. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs kicked-off its season with a quality outing, as both teams finished second at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, hosted by Central Michigan University in Shepherd, Mich., Friday afternoon, Sept. 1.

"I was really happy with the race today.  It was exciting to get so many new faces out on the course for the first time.  The guys executed our plan and raced the last mile really well.  We are excited to get back to work for the rest of the season," said EMU men's cross country Head Coach Mark Rinker.

Senior harrier Marcus Kemp paced the Green and White men, as he placed eighth overall, crossing the finish line in 15:14.2. Immediately following Kemp was sophomore Sam Peterson and freshman Ty Dailey, who placed ninth and 10th, finishing in 15:19.3 and 15:23.2, respectively.

Lochlan Cornelius and Ronan Codyre  concluded the top-15 finishers for the Eagles, as the two freshmen churned out outstanding starts to their respective collegiate cross country careers.

The men would end the day placing second, scoring 37 points in total.

"It was a decent opener for us.  We still have more athletes to add to our line up but it was great to kick off the season with a solid showing.  We're looking forward to putting in more work and getting better every meet," said Director of Track and Filed/Cross Country Sue Parks, regarding the women's performance.

Senior Captain Esme Davies led the charge for the women as she placed second overall, finishing in 17:15.5 to begin her senior campaign. Davies was closely tailed by junior Marta Moreno, who took third place and clocked in at 17:51.5. Tabatha Walford also secured herself a top-10 finish, placing eighth in 18:11.4.

Along with the men, the women also secured a second place finish at the Drenth, with 50 points.
