Several current and former Eagles are continuing to shine on the track and in the field this summer
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Members of the Eastern Michigan University track & field program continue to impress in big competitions as four former Eagles recently took part in national and international championship events. Three Eagles, led by Olympian Donald Scott, competed at the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships last week while Brittni Mason is currently in Paris, France, representing the United States at the 2023 Para World Championships.
Last week at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Scott, Natalie Cizmas, and Willy Fink each competed at the U.S. national championship event with hopes of not only winning a title, but also earning a berth onto Team USA for the upcoming World Athletics Outdoor Championships next month in Budapest, Hungary. Following the competition, Scott walked away with his ninth USATF crown as he captured the triple jump title with a leap of 17.22m (56-06.00) and meeting the world championship standard in the process. Scott won his fourth USATF outdoor title and ninth overall (five indoor championships) while collecting his third career indoor/outdoor sweep after winning titles in both events in 2019, 2022, and 2023. Scott will now set his sights on Budapest where he will jump in the qualification round Aug. 19 with the finalists coming back Aug. 21.
Both Cizmas and Fink raced in distance events on the track with Cizmas racing in the first round of the women's 1,500m run and Fink taking part in the final of the men's 10,000m run. Cizmas opened the racing with a time of 4:28.54 and placed 34th overall while Fink ran 29:56.54 to finish 18th overall.
Across the pond, Mason was back in the red, white, and blue of the U.S. as she competed in the first of two events on the track. Racing in the T47 division, Mason won her heat of the 100m dash in 12.38 to qualify fourth following the races July 10. In the July 11 final, Mason ran a season-best 12.24 to finish second and garner her third individual world championship medal after earning silver in the 100m and 200m events at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Mason will race again next week in Paris as she is set for the 200m dash, July 17.
Recent graduate Baldvin Magnusson also is set to compete later this month at the Icelandic Championships in Reykjavik, Iceland, where he will look to earn a berth into the World Athletics Championships as well. Earlier this month, Magnusson raced 3,000m at the Watford Grand Prix meet in Watford, England, and placed third overall in an Icelandic national record time of 7:49.68. The previous record of 7:54.72 was run two years earlier by Hlyn Andresson. With that time, Magnusson now holds four national records, three of which come on outdoor surfaces, including the 1,500m (3:40.36, March 23, 2023) and 5,000m (13:32.47, April 14, 2022) to go along with the 7:41.51 (Feb. 12, 2022) he ran in the indoor 3,000m.
