YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field teams will send 11 student-athletes to compete at the NCAA East First Round Championship in Jacksonville Fla., which will take place next week beginning Wednesday, May, 24 and conclude Saturday, May 27.

A total of 10 members of the men's team will compete, led by distance runners Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyi, Iceland-Hull University) and Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College), who will each compete in a pair of events.

Magnusson, the Mid-American Conference Most Outstanding Track Performer in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, respectively, will run in both the 1,500 meter and 5,000 meter events. He had a first place finish in the 1,500 meter run, second place finish in the 10,000 meter event, and third place finish in the 5,000 meter to collect an incredible 24 points for the Eagles at the MAC Outdoor Championship last weekend.

Gualter will compete in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Prep) and Callum Robinson (Goderich, Ontario-St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School-Simon Fraser) will both run the 200 meters while Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor-Barton C.C.) will compete in the 110 meter hurdles. Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton-Central Michigan) will run the 400 meter hurdles for the Eagles. Lander set a PR to place second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.41, the seventh best mark in school history last weekend at the MAC Championship.

In the field events, Yvan Lopes-Ribeiro (Nice, France-Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves American International) and Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica-Jamaica College-Nebraska) will compete in the long jump, while Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer-Coastal Carolina) will take part in the triple jump. Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) will compete in the hammer throw.

On the women's side, Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) will run the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. She was the league's Most Outstanding Track Performer following the outdoor season. Gazaway's dominant 2022-23 season continued at the outdoor championships, where she took home titles in the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. She was also the lead runner on Eastern Michigan's winning 4 x 400 meter relay team that captured the crown in Akron last week. Gazaway accounted for 22.5 of Eastern Michigan's total points. Gazway finished her 2022-23 indoor and outdoor seasons with four titles, and two respective nods as a First Team All-MAC selection.
