Men's Golf Looks to Take Back the MAC Championship Crown

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will compete at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championship Sunday through Tuesday, April 30-May 2, at Canebrake Golf Club. Ohio University will host the three-day, 54-hole event for the eight MAC schools which sponsor men's golf – Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, and Toledo.
The youthful Eagles have posted the 22nd-lowest four-player team scoring average at 299.4. Overall, Eastern Michigan has finished in the top-10 at five different tournaments this season, including a third-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, Sept. 12-13, 2022.
Senior Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) individually leads the team with an average of 73.97. Junior Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) follows with a 75.17 season average, while freshman Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario-Aurora) has put together a solid campaign of his own, scoring an average of 75.42 this year.
The league's men's golf championship will be held at the 7,237-yard, par-72 Canebrake Golf Club for the first time ever.
The Green and White will tee off at 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET). Sunday morning. Rounds two and three are set for Monday and Tuesday, respectively, beginning at 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET) Fans can follow all the action via Golfstat.
Additionally, Ohio University in coordination with ESPN will have cameras set up on holes 16, 17 and 18 each day. Coach and student-athlete interviews will also highlight the coverage.
Last year, EMU finished in a tie with Miami for fifth place with a three-day cumulative score of 898 (289-309-300). Kent State came from behind to capture its sixth consecutive league title, finishing at 17-over 881 (295-301-285) at White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville, Ill.
After holding an opening round lead, Cougar Collins tied for seventh with a seven-over 223 (67-78-78) for his first top-10 finish of the 2021-22 campaign.
Eastern Michigan last captured the league title in 2019. It marked Eastern Michigan's third all-time MAC men's golf championship after previously earning the trophy in 2007 and 2008.
Kent State is ranked No. 65 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (102), Northern Illinois (128), Ball State (134), Miami (142), Bowling Green (188), Eastern Michigan (216), Ohio (255), and Central Michigan (265).
The winner will receive the MAC's automatic bid to one of six NCAA Regional sites May 15-17. The 2023 regional sites are: Auburn University Club (Auburn), The Cliffs at Keowee Falls (Clemson), Eagle Eye Golf Club (Michigan State), Bear's Best Las Vegas (UNLV), Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Oklahoma), The Institute Golf Club (San Jose State).
Three regional sites will have 13 teams and 10 individuals and three will have 14 teams and five individuals. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to play in the championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. taking place May 26-31.
