Track and Field Has Strong Showing at Trio of California Events

Student-athletes notched 10 EMU top-10 finishes and recorded eight personal bests
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at three different meets in California this weekend. The Eagles traveled to the Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, and the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles posted 10 top ten finishes and eight personal bests at the Mt. SAC Relays, led by Eddie Zuercher's (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) third place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 9:01.62.
Also for the men's team, Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France-Lycee Honore d'Edtiennes d'Orves-American International) placed fourth in the long jump (7.40 meters) and the 4x100m relay of Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor-Barton CC), Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Prep), Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) and Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer-Coastal Carolina) were fourth in 40.25, which stands as the sixht-fastest time in program history.
Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton-Central Michigan) placed sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (52.44), Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) was eighth in the 110 meter hurdles in 14.54. Toby Gualter (Tawa New Zealand-Tawa College) placed eighth in the 5,000 meters elite with a personal best time of 13:53.25 while Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) was 10th in the high jump (2.00 meters) and Sadler took 10th in the triple jump (14.74 meters).
Micah Martin (Clinton Township, Mich.-L'anse Creuse) was the top EMU women's finisher with a sixth place finish in the high jump with a personal best lump of 1.68 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays while the 4x400 relay of Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton), Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child), and Noriyah Johnson (Chania Greece-Second General-Abilene Christian) placed eighth with a time of 3:42.30.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Fleur van der Linden (Drunen, Netherlands-d'Oultremont College) posted a personal best vault 3.60 meters to place third in the pole vault C while Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands-American School of The Hague) took third in the 1,500 meters B with a PR of 4:34.82 to lead the Eagles. Maura Lane (Cary, N.C.-Panther Creek-Campbell) placed seventh in the pole vault B group also with 3.60 meters.
Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) also finished in the top ten as she finished eighth in the discus (43.68 meters) as three women placed in the top ten.
On the men's side, Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) was the top EMU finisher as he placed second in the hammer with a throw of 63.93 meters.
Jacob Niedzwiecki (Toledo, Ohio-Whitmer) was fourth in the pole vault B (4.75 meters), Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) was seventh in the high jump A (2.02 meters) to round out the trio of men placing in the top ten at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
At the Beach Invitational, Gazaway led the way for the women with a pair of top ten finishes as she was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles posting a personal best time of 59.91 while also placing sixth in the 100 hurdles (13.61). Her time in the 400m hurdles ranks as the seventh-fastest time in program history and makes her the seventh woman to finish the event in under 60 seconds in program record. Kyra Buffen (Columbus, Ga.-Buford-Benedict) finished fourth in the triple jump with a PR of 12.31 meters.
On the men's side, Simpson had a pair of top ten finishes as he was fifth in the 200 meters (21.18) and 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.43. Lander was the top men's finisher as he placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (52.28) and Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-St. Charles Preparatory) took fifth in the triple jump (15.36 meters).

Mt. SAC Relays
» Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Deer Lakes)(1:51.12) was 13th and Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron) was 14th (1:51.17) as both posted personal bests in the 800 meters while Callum Robinson (Goderich, Ontario-St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School-Simon Fraser) posted a PR of 47.53 to finish 18th in the 400 meters as five Eagles posted personal bests in the meet joining Zuercher in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Gualter in the 5,000 meters elite.
» Martin's PR in the high jump (1.68) meters was one of three personal bests for the women as Moreno posted a PR of 16:25.71 in the 5,000 meters elite to place 12th while Buffen placed 15th in the triple jump with a personal best of 12.27 meters. The time for Moreno ranks her sixth all-time in program history in the event.
Bryan Clay Invitational
» Moreno and Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich.-Caillac)(4:46.00) both posted personal bests in the 1,500 meters while van der Linden also had a PR with her third place finish in the pole vault.
» Six men posted personal best times in the 1,500 meters over two races as Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario-St. Mary's Kitchener-Providence)(3:45.77) was 92nd, Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste")(3:46.93) was 109th and Gualter (3:49.33) finished 142nd in the 1,500 meter invitational race by all running PR's.
» In the 1,500 meters A race, McCoy (3:47.21) was 15th, Zuercher (3:50.26) took 72nd and Brandal (3:51.63) was 104th as all three ran personal bests.
Long Beach Invitational
» Gazaway (400 hurdles) and Buffen (triple jump) posted personal bests on the women's side.
The Eagles will compete at the Len Paddock Open at the University of Michigan on Saturday.
