DeKalb, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team is heading home with a win after defeating Northern Illinois University, 5-2, today, April 14, in DeKalb, Ill.
The win moves Eastern Michigan (6-6, 3-4 MAC) back to .500 on the season, and moves the Eagles within one match of even in Mid-American Conference play. The Eagles were able to upend the Huskies after falling to them just one week ago, 4-3, in a match that was played in Ypsilanti, April 7.
How it Happened
Eastern Michigan claimed the doubles point for the second time in as many matches against the Huskies. In today's match, it was the No. 2 pairing of Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics) and Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava) who brought home the win at the No. 2 position. The duo picked up a 6-3 victory after winning in the No. 1 slot during last week's matchup with the Huskies.
EMU also won at the No. 3 doubles spot as, Linda Eloundou Nga (Yaounde, Cameroon-Augustine Meyou-New Mexico Military Institute) and Andrea Quiroz (Lima, Peru-La Molina 1278-Alcorn State) paired up to earn a 6-3 decision.
As play moved to singles, so too did the momentum for EMU. The Eagles dropped both the matches at No. 1 and No. 2, but made a clean sweep of position Nos. 3-6, respectively.
It was Daniella Shved (Holon, Isreal-ORT Holon) who played in the No. 3 spot for EMU, where she picked up a closely-contested, 6-3, 7-5 win. Meanwhile, Wanyi Zhang (Bejing, China-Crnjanski Gimnzija (Serbia)) was excellent in the No. 4 spot, where she dropped just four games en route to a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Brichackova persevered through an incredible tough set to win, 7-5, before cruising to a straight-set win with a 6-2 performance in the second set at the No. 5 slot. Nga closed out EMU's winning stretch with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot.
