YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team played its annual spring game Friday, April 14, inside Rynearson Stadium with Green securing a 14-12 victory over Gray. The game, which started under sunny skies and ended under the Factory Lights, capped a day of celebration as the team received their 2022 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl championship rings and added 2022 All-American Jose Ramirez' name to the Ring of Honor.
Five quarterbacks saw action for the Eagles, including Austin Smith (Ellenwood, Ga.-Cedar Grove), Ike Udengwu III (City of Industry, Calif.-Workman-Mt. San Antonio), Cam'Ron McCoy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Mary's), Brooks Blount (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West-DuPage), and Jeremiah Salem (Germantown, Tenn.-Houston). The group led the Eagles offense through numerous situational plays, including the two-minute drill, red zone offense, and normal sets.
Gray got on the board first with Smith connecting on a five-yard pass to Blake Daniels (Macomb, Mich.-L'Anse North-Davenport). Two series later, Elijah Jackson-Anderson (Flint, Mich.-Grand Blanc) found the end zone on a three-yard run up the middle for the second touchdown of the day. Smith also went deep late in the third quarter and connected with Hamze El-Zayat (Dearborn, Mich.-Fordson-Fordham) as the newcomer pulled down a 58-yard reception and was called down at the two.
The kicking game also was put through its paces as the duo of Mitchell Tomasek (Columbus, Ohio-Worthington Kilbourne) and Ryan Kingston (South Bend, Ind.-Riley) combined for seven punts. Tomasek launched four punts with a pair of 45-yarders while also chipping a 39-yard kick that was downed at the one. Kingston punted three times and hit a best of 40 yards on his first kick.
Jesús Gómez (Puebla, Mexico-Prepa Tec Puebla) was perfect in his kicking duties as he was 2-of-2 in point-after attempts before hitting both of his field goals. He lined up and drilled his first attempt from 43 yards out before launching a 50-yarder with room to spare.
Defensively, the Eagles got their hands on several passes and registered three interceptions. The first came from Cameron Smith (Cleveland, Ohio-Euclid), who went up top to grab the ball at his own 30-yard line and ran 51 yards on the return. The second and third picks came on back-to-back possessions late in the third quarter. The first saw newcomer Jesse Vasquez (Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) nab a pass in the back of the end zone before bringing the ball out to the 10-yard line. That was followed two plays later by Barry Manning (Stone Mountain, Ga.-Tucker) plucking a pass out of the air and rumbling 12 yards for the return.
