Weather Adjusts Men’s Golf Trip to West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will participate in the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue's Ackerman-Allen Golf Course, April 14-15. This marks the 19th year of the Boilermaker Invitational, but just the second year it has been played on the par 71, 7,275-yard Ackerman-Allen setup. The first 17 were played at Kampen before the event moved to Ackerman-Allen last season.
With less than desirable weather conditions expected on Sunday, April 16, the event has been moved up a date to try to get the 54-hole event completed. Teams will play an opening round on Friday, April 14, and then play rounds two and three on Saturday, April 15. Play will begin with a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday and a 9 a.m. start on Saturday.
Joining the Eagles and the Boilermakers at the event will be Ball State, Butler, Illinois State, IUPUI, Kent State, Loyola Chicago, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Southern Illinois, Wisconsin, and Western Kentucky.
Ackerman-Allen is a Pete Dye design with a deep, rich history. It was built in 1934 and later redesigned in 1968. It was redeveloped again in 1998 and renamed after the Ackerman family. The South course hosted the 1968 NCAA Championships, won by the Boilermakers while Jack Nicklaus was the individual medalist that season.
Last year at the event, EMU had to overcome gusts of better than 20 miles per hour to deliver a third-place finish, April 10, 2022. The Eagles closed the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 12-over, 296 to move up two spots on the leaderboard and finish the tournament with an 877 (+25). Playing under tough wind conditions, the Eagles used steady play to move up in a day that saw all but three teams score at a higher rate than their respective second-round scores. No. 21 Illinois squad claimed the title, with a dominant 10-under, 842.
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew has taken part in the event eight times (2008-09-10-12-13-21-22-23).
