Newlyn Stephenson Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Stephenson picked up First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 10
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) closed out his indoor track and field career by earning USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors for the first time as he placed seventh in the weight throw at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Mexico on Friday night, March 10.
Stephenson's best throw of the championship was his first, a heave of 22.32 meters (73 feet, 2.75 inches). He is the first Eastern Michigan thrower to compete in the NCAA Championships three times. He placed 11th in 2022 with a throw of 21.52m, while placing 16th with a toss of19.32m in 2021. Stephenson was the seventh-highest seed after registering a toss of 22.61m at the Silverston Invitational, Feb 17.
The Eagles will open the outdoor track and field season at the Black and Gold Invite at Central Florida on Friday and Saturday.
