Stephenson to Represent EMU at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

EMU senior earns the invite for third consecutive season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) will compete in the weight throw at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday, March 10, at 7 p.m. MT (9 p.m. ET). The championships will be hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Stephenson is the first EMU thrower to compete in the weight throw three times at the national meet. He finished 11th in 2022 with a heave of 21.52m, while placing 16th with a toss of 19.32m in 2021.
Taige Bryant and Anthony Jones both took part in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoors twice. Jones qualified in 2015 and 2016 where he finished 13th (20.48m) and seventh (21.52m), respectively. Bryant notched First-Team All-American honors last season with a mark of 22.21m in sixth after an 11th-place showing in 2021 (21.13m).
David Seaborne is the only other EMU thrower to make it to the championship meet in the event. At the 1998 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Seaborne produced a throw of 18.69m for 13th in the competition.
Stephenson has the seventh-highest seed mark after registering a toss of 22.61m at the Silverston Invitational, Feb 17.
Kennesaw State's Isaiah Rogers owns the nation's best mark of 24.37m this season. Alabama's Bobby Colantonio is second in the Division I ranks with a 23.71m throw at the Southeastern Conference Championships, Feb. 23. The record at the national meet is 24.64m, set by Wisconsin's Michael Lihrman in 2015.
ESPN+ will stream the championships live starting at 11:30 a.m. ET Friday, March 10, and starting at 1:30 p.m. ET Saturday, March 11. There will be two re-airs of the meet. The first re-air will take place starting at 6 p.m. ET time on Sunday, March 12, on ESPNU. The second re-air of the championship will take place starting at 7 p.m. ET time Monday, March 13, on ESPNU.
