YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team is set to return home Wednesday, Feb. 8, when it plays host to Mid-American Conference rival Ball State University inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. Tipoff in the battle of the birds is set for 7 p.m.
EMU (12-9, 4-6 MAC) is looking to pick up a second straight conference win after defeating Central Michigan University, 68-54, in its most recent outing, Feb. 4. The Eagles will face a red-hot Ball State (19-4, 8-1 MAC) team that is jockeying for the first overall seed in the upcomcing Mid-American Conference Tournament, set for March 8-11 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Wednesday's game will broadcast on ESPN+, where Ryan Wooley (play-by-play) and Reggie Butler (analyst) will have the call. Fans can also tune in via WEMU (89.1 FM) or the Varsity Network app, where Tom Helmer will provide the blow-by-blow.
CHIPS, DIPPED: With its 68-54 dismantling of Central Michigan, Feb. 4, EMU has now won four consecutive games in the series, dating back to the 2020-21 campaign. The stretch is the best for Eastern Michigan since it took 16 straight against its in-state rivals between 2001-2008. Additionally, Eastern now has consecutive road wins inside McGuirk Arena for the first time since it did so between 2006-08 seasons, respectively. In those years, Eastern defeated CMU, 57-50, Feb. 28, 2007 before following it up with another win in Mount Pleasant, 68-66, Jan. 19, 2008.
FOUR STRAIGHT: Eastern has won four consecutive contests against Central Michigan. It is the second-longest active stretch for EMU against MAC opponents. The Green and White currently hold a five-game win streak against Miami University.
GAME-CHANGING CHARITY: Eastern Michigan made a season-high 23 free throws on 30 attempts against Central Michigan, Feb. 4. The 23 makes are the most for the team since it hit 29 against Miami, Jan. 29, 2022. Additionally, Eastern's 76.7-percent clip from the charity stripe is its sixth-best single-game performance of the season, and overall effort since it hit 90.9-percent of its attempts (10-of-11) against Western Michigan, Jan. 25.
Sophomore Lachelle Austin led the Green and White with 10 free throw makes, the second-best single-game total of her career. She previously hit 11 freebies against Southern Indiana University, Dec. 10.
RIVALRY ROBBERY: Eastern's defense was outstanding against CMU, recording a season-high 16 steals as part of a 29-turnover day for the Chippewas. The 16 steals are the most by Eastern against an NCAA Division I opponent since it recorded the same number in a game against Miami, Jan. 12, 2021. Additionally, 16 steals tie for the third-highest number in a single game by any Mid-American Conference team this season, and ties for the most for any team in a conference game this season. Eastern Michigan has recorded 10+ steals in five games this season.
TURNOVER TOWN: Eastern Michigan forced Central Michigan into 29 turnovers, Feb. 4. That number was the most by the Chippewas this season, and is tied for the most turnovers forced by any MAC team this season (Bowling Green forced 29 EMU turnovers, Jan. 7). Included in the 29 turnovers was 13 in the first quarter alone, a number that bests six full-game totals for EMU this season.
Eastern Michigan currently ranks fourth in the Mid-American Conference, forcing 17.05 turnovers per contest. EMU has not had a season in which it has forced an average of 17 or more turnovers per game since the 2019-20 campaign, where it forced 17.8 blunders per contest. EMU's best-ever mark in the Fred Castro Era (2016-Pres.) was 18.6 turnovers forced per game, which came in the 2017-18 season.
SWIPE SISTERS: It was a career-day on defense for a pair of Eagles at CMU, Feb. 4. Freshman Olivia Smith led the way with a career-best-tying four swipes to lead all Eagles, while Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu added a career-standard three steals of her own. The duo accounted for 44 percent (7-of-16) of Eastern's total thieveries. Her sixth multi-steal game, including her career-best third in four games, the four swipes were the best by Smith since she racked up the same total at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Nov. 13, 2022. Meanwhile, Ozzy-Momodu tabbed multiple takeaways for the fourth time this season, the first since recording two at Kent State, Jan. 18.
STEAL CITY, U.S.A.: Five EMU players tallied two or more steals in the win over CMU, Feb. 4. It was the seventh time this season in which the Green and White have had at least three players with multiple steals in a game. If Eastern can keep the trend going, the team is on pace to topping last season's 10 games with three or more players recording two-plus steals in a single game. Additionally, the five Eagles with multiple steals in a single game is the most for EMU since Feb. 16, 2022 when the Green and White defeated Miami University, 70-61.
SUCCESS UNDER 60: EMU held the Chippewas to just 54 points Saturday, Feb. 4. Tied for the fourth-lowest opponent output this season, it marked the seventh time this season that the Green and White has kept its opponent under 60 points. EMU is 7-0 in those games. Additionally, Eastern has now held its opposition under 60 points 49 times since the start of the 2016-17 season, and boasts a 42-7 record in such contests (89.4% winning clip).
SIX FROM SKANES: Ce'Nara Skanes had added the three-point shot to her repertoire this season. The Oklahoma City native has knocked down 16 in 2022-23 after hitting just one in her previous campaigns. The 16, which ranks fourth on the team, included a team-best two makes from deep at CMU, Feb. 4. It marked the fifth time this season in which Skanes has led the team in triples. That is tied for the second-most of any player on the team. Olivia Smith has paced EMU's long-range attack in nine games, while Lachelle Austin has also led the team in five.
UNDER 30 IN 20: Eastern Michigan held Central Michigan to just 22 points in the first half of its game with the Chippewas, Feb. 4, the 13th time this season Eastern has held a team under 30 in the first half this season, and second game in a row (27 points for Ohio, Feb. 1). The 22 first-half points are the fourth-fewest allowed in any half of play by EMU this season, and the fewest since yielding just 17 in the first 20 minutes to Xavier University, Dec. 17.
EMU held opponents to 27 points or fewer in the first half of play in just six contest last season.
TOUGH FIRST 10: The Green and White went seven minutes before allowing a single point to CMU, Feb. 4. Overall, the seven points that Central scored in the first quarter are the fewest by any MAC team against Eastern this season.
HOT STARTS LEAD TO WINS: EMU scored 15 points in the first quarter against Central Michigan, Feb. 4, marking the 12th contest this season in which the Eagles as a team scored 15 or more points in the opening quarter. The Eagles are 8-4 in those contests.
DEATH, TAXES, DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Ce'Nara Skanes continues to dominate Mid-American Conference competition. She put up a 18-point, 11-rebound performance against Central Michigan to record her 29th-career double-double. The Oklahoma City native has now produced a double-double performance in 43 percent (29-of-68) of her career games, the highest percentage amongst any Eastern player. Additionally, she ranks 47th in the nation among active career double-double leaders, and has the second-highest total in the MAC, only behind Northern Illinois University's Aijha Davis (41).
ANOTHER 20-POINT PERFORMANCE: Sophomore Lachelle Austin led the Eagles with 21 points against Central Michigan, Feb. 4. The third 20-point performance of her career, the total was just two points shy of her career-best, which she set against NIU, Jan. 28. All of Austin's 20-point performances have come this season.
RECORD BOOK WATCH: Forward Ce'Nara Skanes, now in her fourth season with the Eagles, is on pace to reach the 1,000-point plateau in 2023. Already a 1,000-point collegiate scorer (1,179, including 250 at Florida International in 2018-19), Skanes would become Eastern Michigan's 25th 1,000-point scorer if she can hit the mark (71 points away). Areanna Combs (2019-22) was the last player to eclipse the milestone, finishing her career in the No. 15 spot for all-time scoring at EMU (1,257).
SKANES' SCORING SHEET: Junior Ce'Nara Skanes scored 18 points and collected 11 rebounds in win at CMU, Feb. 4. It was the sixth time that Skanes had scored 18 points or better for the Green and White this season, a team high. Her season best is 23 against Toledo, Jan. 28 while her career-best is 30 points which she set against the University of Illinois Chicago, Nov. 29, 2020.
ALL-TIME VERSUS BALL STATE: With the 88th meeting upcoming, Eastern Michigan boasts a 45-42 edge in the all-time series with Ball State. Additionally, the Eagles have bested the Cardinals in five of the last nine meetings. A win Wednesday would mark EMU's first over the Cards since Dec. 2, 2022. A loss would give BSU four straight victories in the series. Ball State has not accomplished that feat since it won four consecutive matchups between 2017-18. Eastern last picked up three-straight wins during the 2019-20 season, in which it swept the regular season series and defeated Ball State in the MAC Tournament.
TIME TO SNAP THE STEAK: Eastern is looking to snap a three-game losing skid at the hands of Ball State when it faces the Cardinals Wednesday night. EMU's last win over Ball State came Dec. 2, 2020 in Muncie, where the Green and White secured a 77-58 victory. BSU has won the last three matchups by an average of 16 points per contest. A win for the Cardinals would give them the first four-game win streak by any team in the series since Ball State hit that number between the 2016-2018 seasons, respectively.
LAST TIME AGAINST BALL STATE: EMU couldn't match BSU in 2021-22's regular-season finale, dropping its road affair, 92-58, March 5, inside Worthen Arena.
The Eagles (7-20, 4-16 MAC) had three players score in double figures, led by freshman Lachelle Austin, who had 14 points. Ce'Nara Skanes tacked on 11 points and nine rebounds, while ZaNiya Nelson helped out with 10 points.
EASTERN ROOTS IN MUNCIE: EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee completed his undergraduate degree at Ball State (1997), and also served as a graduate assistant in its ticket office from 1997-99.
On the flip side, BSU Associate Director of Athletic Communications Brad Caudill holds his undergraduate degree from EMU and worked for the legendary Jim Streeter in the SID Office.
LOPSIDED: Eastern Michigan has been no stranger to lopsided games this year in terms of scoring margin. In Eastern's 12 wins, the Eagles have upended their competition by an average of 11.4 points per contest. Meanwhile, the team's nine setbacks have come by an average of 14 points. With the 66-61 win over NIU, Jan. 25, just two games this season have been decided by five or fewer points (vs. Miami, Jan. 4). Last season, four games were decided within that margin.
EAGLES IN THE MAC: Four Eagles rank in various statistical categories throughout the MAC. Holding the highest ranking for the Green and White is sophomore Tayra Eke, who is second in the league in total blocks (37) and blocks per game (1.8). Additionally, Eke's 6.9 rebounds per game is good for eighth in the league. Freshman Olivia Smith ranks 10th in the MAC in three-pointers per game (1.9), while sophomore Lachelle Austin's 2.1 steals per game is good for fifth in the conference. Junior Ce'Nara Skanes' 8.3 rebounds per game ranks her fourth in the league and her 1.0 blocks per game ranks her ninth.
BUILDING A BETTER WALL: EMU has registered a total of 101 blocks in the 21 games played (4.8 blocks per game). A season ago, the Green and White earned 88 blocks in 27 games (3.3 blocks per game). Not only did the Eagles surpass the previous season's total in almost half the amount of games, but they are on pace to have the most successful blocking average in program history.
BACK IN #MACTION: The Green and White's 2022-23 campaign marks the 42nd season Eastern Michigan will compete as a member of the Mid-American Conference. Playing a league schedule since the 1981-82 campaign, EMU has compiled a 303-397 record against conference opponents all-time.
RING CHASING: Eastern entered league play in search of its first conference championship since 2012. That year, the Eagles captured both the MAC West and MAC Tournament titles.
As a program, EMU has claimed four division crowns (2004, 2006, 2008, 2012) and two tournament championships (2004, 2012).
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern Michigan remains at home for a game against Western Michigan University Saturday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. The game will serve as the first leg of a men's and women's doubleheader in Ypsilanti.
