BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field program captured the team titles at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 25, as the men won eight individual crowns and the women added one to sweep the championships inside Perry Field House in Bowling Green, Ohio. Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) led the way for the Eagles as he captured three individual crowns (mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m runs) to score a blistering 30 points as the men retained their crown won last year.
"I'm incredibly proud of our student-athletes," said Director Sue Parks. "It's never easy to win a championship and these two were hard fought. We had a great first day but we faced some adversity on the final day. I give all the credit to our athletes for continuing to battle throughout the meet. We had a number of athletes step up when others were down and that's what you need to win team titles. I can't say enough about the selflessness of some of our athletes who ran multiple events to help the team win. Our coaching staff did a great job of preparing our athletes for the meet. This was truly a team effort and we're excited to achieve a goal that we first started talking about last fall. This is our first double win in track & field since 2018 at Bowling Green and we're thrilled to bring both trophies back to EMU!"
Team Sweep
In the team race, the Eastern men tallied 171 points with Kent State University taking second with 160 points while the University Akron (128) and the University at Buffalo (62) rounded out the scoring. In the women's competition, the team scoring was closer as the Eagles' 89.5 points placed them ahead of Ball State University's 83.0 points. Bowling Green State University (74.5), Kent State (73.5) and Miami University (66.0) rounded out the top five in the women's standings.
Overall, the Eagles swept the team titles for the fourth time in program history as both Eastern teams hoisted the trophy in the same meet in 1997, 2000, and 2018 before this year's sweep. The Eagles are one of two schools to sweep the MAC indoor titles with Akron taking home both titles in 2017.
Best in the Business
With the sweep, Eastern continues to build upon its legacy of championship excellence as the Eagles brought home MAC Championships No. 156 and No. 157. The most decorated athletics department in the conference, the titles earned this week bring the Eastern men's indoor total to 17 MAC crowns while the women secured their eighth.
More Honors
Following the meet, EMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Sue Parks earned a pair of awards as she was named the MAC Men's and Women's Coach of the Year following her teams' sweep. Park's accolades are the eighth and ninth of her career as she previously garnered the women's honor three times with Ball State before earning four with the Eagles. She also has been honored with the men's accolade each of the past two years. By receiving both awards, Parks is the first coach to sweep the accolades at the MAC indoor meet since 2017 when Akron's Dennis Mitchell did so. Additionally, with four women's honors, Parks is second among any EMU coach with four indoor MAC Coach of the Year accolades, moving past her legendary father, Bob Parks, who was a three-time men's honoree.
Gold Rush
Five men combined to win eight individual titles over the course of the two-day event with Magnusson leading the way. He opened the meet winning the 5,000m run Friday night, taking gold in a meet-record 13:58.24. On Saturday, Magnusson came back to open the day with a victory in the mile run (4:15.29) before claiming gold in the penultimate event, the 3,000m run, in 8:02.59. His time in 3,000m is a meet record and took down the mark of 8:04.53 run in 2003 by Boaz Cheboiywo.
Staying on the track, Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) brought home two titles as he sprinted to gold in both the 60m and 200m dashes. In the shortest sprint, Simpson clocked in at 6.76 to tie his personal best and the No. 9 time in program history. He came back at the end of the meet and completed the single-lap race in 21.60 to take first. Freshman Connor McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa. Deer Lakes) made the most of his MAC indoor debut as he raced to a time of 1:51.97 to win the 800m.
The Eagles won a pair of events in the field with both coming Friday night. First, Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) took home the top spot in the weight throw with his winning heave of 22.27m (71-3.00). Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France-Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves-American International), who was competing in his first MAC indoor meet, jumped his way to gold in the long jump with a best of 7.38m (24-02.50). Lopes Ribeiro nearly added a second title in the 60m hurdles, but was edged by Alex Sheilds of Kent State as both ran 7.89, but when taking the time to the thousandths, Sheilds won, 7.881 to 7.888.
Golden Girl
The women used an all-around team effort to claim the team championship as the Eagles captured just one individual title on the weekend with Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) securing gold in the 60m hurdles. Gazaway was the top qualifier out of the preliminary round Friday as she clocked a time of 8.46. In the Saturday final, she turned on the gas and won the title in 8.41, the sixth-fastest time in program history.
Picking Up Points
Baldvin Magnusson's outstanding 30-point, three-title performance garnered him the 2023 MAC Men's Most Valuable Performer award for the second year in a row. The MVP trophy is the 22nd earned by an Eastern man since 1996 with 18 different Eagles earning the award. Magnusson is the first multiple-time recipient from Eastern since Willy Fink earned the honor in 2015 and 2017. He also is the first Eastern man to win the award in consecutive indoor meets since Terefe Ejigu earned the accolade in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Magnusson was one of three men that scored over 20 points this weekend with Lopes Ribeiro adding 24 to the team total and Simpson adding 22. Along with his win in the long jump, Lopes Ribeiro added eight points for his second-place finish in the 60m hurdles and six points for placing third in the triple jump. Simpson earned two more points by running on the second-place 4x400m relay to go with his two victories.
On the women's side, Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door-Academy) was the top scorer as she accumulated 16 points by placing second in both the 60m (7.53) and 200m (24.29) dashes. Behind Gazaway's 10 points were Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) with nine points, including runner-up in the 400m (56.31) and eighth in the 200m (24.94); and both Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich.-Cadillac), who was second in the 800m run (2:11.03) and Maura Lane (Cary, N.C.-Panther Creek-Campbell), who was second in the pole vault (3.71m/12-2.00).
