Eagles Drop 3-0 Decision at Ohio

EMU returns home for matches against Kent State University, Nov. 10-11
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team suffered a three-set loss to the Bobcats of Ohio University as it closed out its time in Athens, Ohio, Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Convocation Center.
Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio/Newark Catholic) recorded eight kills on the day to lead the Eagles' attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .364. Basham also had four digs and a match-high three blocks.
The Green and White saw 12 digs from and Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss./Brandon/Mississippi State) to lead them defensively.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles fell behind early, dropping a tough first set, 25-19. Eastern Michigan trailed by as many as seven points as Ohio never surrendered the lead in a set that was tied up just once before the Bobcats took control.
SET 2 | A 25-13 set-two loss put Eastern Michigan in a 2-0 deficit in the match. The Green and White trailed by as many as 12 points as Ohio grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that was tied up four times before the Bobcats took over the lead.
SET 3 | Ohio finished off the sweep with a set-three victory. The Eagles dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set, 25-14.
Match Notes
» Basham's eight kills without an error were the most kills without an error the senior has had in a match in her career, besting her seven-kill, no-error performance against Miami University, Oct. 14, 2022. Basham had 16 kills with one error in the series against Ohio.
» Minshew's 12 digs led the team, marking the third time this season and second-consecutive match that she led the team in digs (third match was Sept. 26 against Central Michigan University). Minshew recorded double-figure digs for the 10th time this season and 29th time in her career.
» Hannah Howard (Toledo, Ohio./Saint Ursula Academy) recorded her second career kill in the match. Howard went the first 25 matches of her career without a kill before tallying a kill in back-to-back matches. Howard also had the Eagles' lone service ace of the match.
» Sophomore Kendal Bonney (Pioneer, Ohio/North Central/Ashland) made her sixth start of the season, recording three kills. Bonney also tallied two blocks.
» As a team, Eastern Michigan recorded four total blocks, led by three from Basham. Four stops topped Ohio's one, marking the team's ninth match out-blocking its opponent and the fourth consecutive after doing so against Bowling Green State University (Oct. 26), Miami (Oct. 27), and Ohio (Nov. 3). It marks the first time this season that EMU has won the blocking battle in four-straight matches.
Historical Notes
» With the result of tonight's matchup, Eastern trails Ohio 19-39, dating back to their first meeting in 1980. The Eagles took a 2-1 victory over the Bobcats at home, Oct. 17, 1980 to begin the all-time series. Over the years, the Green and White of Eastern Michigan have swept the Green and White of Ohio a total of nine times. Three of the last seven matches have been in favor of the Eagles as their 2019 victory broke a 17-year win streak for OU which started in 2002.
