MADISON, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team concluded competition at the 2023 Badger Invitational held Oct. 2-3, with the Eagles finishing 13th overall at the two-day event hosted by the University of Wisconsin on UW's University Ridge Golf Course. Freshman Avery Mahoney (Burlington, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School) was the top finisher for EMU, as he placed tied for 19th overall after carding a 215 (72-74-69).
Eastern finished the tournament with an 872 (288-295-289) to finish 13th overall with Florida Gulf Coast University winning the event, finishing first with 851 (274-286-291). Illinois State University (852) and Middle Tennessee State University (852) shared runner-up honors while Long Beach State University (854) and Virginia Commonwealth University (854) tied for fourth.
How It Happened
Mahoney was one of four Eagles to card at least one round of par or better in the tournament as he opened the event shooting an even-par 72 before closing the final round with three-under 69. He was joined in the group by Cam Kellett (London, Ontario/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Nevada), who fired a first-round three-under 69; Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), who carded rounds of even-par 72 and 1-under 71 in the first two rounds; and Nathaniel Gray Lamont (Guelph, Ontario/Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute), who closed the tournament with a one-under 71.
Overall, Kellett shot a 217 (69-75-73) to finish in a tie for 35th while Deardorff carded a 221 (72-71-78) to tie for 52nd. Gray Lamont shot a 223 (77-75-71) to tie for 61st while Logan Graf (Sylvan Lake, Alberta/HJ Cody) ended his tournament tied for 78th with a 230 (75-79-76).
Additionally, Victor Caliguri (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) played in a tournament for individual competitors and placed 26th overall with a 251 (84-85-82).
Up Next
Eastern returns to action Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the Purdue Fall Invitational. The two-day event will be played at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course near the Purdue campus.
